Guam Catholic Church to file bankruptcy amid abuse lawsuits

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Guam’s Catholic Church will file for bankruptcy — a move that will allow the archdiocese to avoid trial in dozens of lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by priests and move toward settlements.

Archbishop Michael Byrnes announced Wednesday that mediation efforts that began in September led the church to bankruptcy.

“This path will bring the greatest measure of justice to the greatest number of victims,” Byrnes said. “That’s the heart of what we’re doing.”

Byrnes said the bankruptcy will provide “finality for victim survivors that they’ve been heard and understood.”

Attorney Leander James, who is working with alleged victims in Guam, said in a statement the move will help resolve current lawsuits from more than 180 claims of abuse through settlements.
Earlier this year the Vatican removed the suspended Guam archbishop from office and ordered him not to return to the Pacific island after convicting him of some charges in a Vatican sex abuse trial.

The Vatican didn’t say what exactly Archbishop Anthony Apuron had been convicted of, and the sentence was far lighter than those given high-profile elderly prelates found guilty of molesting minors.

Apuron, who has denied the allegations and has not been criminally charged, is 73. The Vatican retirement age is 75.

Pope Francis named a temporary administrator for Guam in 2016 after Apuron was accused by former altar boys of sexually abusing them when he was a priest. Dozens of cases involving other priests on the island have since come to light, and the archdiocese is facing more than $115 million in lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by priests. ... _medium=AP

Merrillville Priest Made Up August Attack; Now Being Investigated For Child Sex Abuse
CHICAGO (CBS) — A Merrillville priest has been placed on administrative leave, after police confirmed he lied about being beaten at his church in August. The priest also faces a “credible accusation of sexual misconduct with a minor.”

Fr. Basil Hutsko, 64, said he was attacked at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Merrillville, Indiana, while praying at the altar on Aug. 20, and claimed his attacker mentioned the clergy sex abuse scandal.

On Tuesday, the Ruthenian Eparchy of Parma, Ohio, which oversees Hutsko’s church, said it verified with Hutsko’s family that the attack “did not occur.” Merrillville police also confirmed Hutsko made up the attack. Police had been investigating a possible hate crime, but now are questioning Hutsko.

It was not clear if Hutsko would face any charges for filing a false police report, but the Ruthenian Eparchy said he has been placed on administrative leave “in response to a credible accusation of sexual misconduct with a minor.”

The eparchy said the attack allegedly happened in 1983.

While on leave, Hutsko will not be allowed to serve in any capacity as a priest.

Before working at St. Michael in Merrillville, Hutsko previously has served at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Cleveland; St. Barbara Byzantine Catholic Church in Dayton, Ohio; St. Basil Byzantine Catholic Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan; and St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Marblehead, Ohio.

Priest Badly Bruised After Hate Crime Beating In Indiana (from August)
CHICAGO (CBS) — A local priest is badly bruised after he was beaten until he passed out Monday. The priest says the attack was not random, but that he was targeted by someone filled with hate.

The attack on Father Basil John Hutsko happened at the Saint Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Merrillville, Indiana.
The FBI is involved in the case, helping local police look for the attacker. Neighbors say they saw a black car outside the church on Monday.

“Mostly the bruising on his forehead, the whole front of his head went into the floor,” said Chief Joseph Petruch of the Merrillville Police Department, as well as a friend and fellow priest. “Grabbed him by the neck, threw him down on the floor and immediately started slamming his head against the floor. Both sides, front and back.”

Father Basil Hutsko face is battered and bruised and his body is in pain.

The incident happened Monday around 9 a.m. when Hutsko was praying at the altar at the church.

At this point, Father Hutsko is not talking publicly, but did talk to CBS 2, as well as police.

“The subject yelled out ‘This is for all the little kids.’ I have enough there to say it’s a hate crime,” said Petruch.

Father Hutsko was attacked the same day Pope Francis issued a letter to Catholics around the world condemning priestly sexual abuse and cover ups. A grand jury report called out 300 predator priests who allegedly molested more than 1,000 children in six Pennsylvania dioceses.

“Do you think that this person was targeted because of his past?” CBS 2’s Audrina Bigos questioned.

“We’re unsure of that. We’re looking into his past,” Petruch responded.

A fellow priest at the church says Father Hutsko has not been found guilty of any sexual abuse charges, but investigators are looking into his background.

Perhaps an investigation into a made up crime led to uncovering a real crime. If so, all's well that ends well.
