Biases are much easier to implement algorithmically.

An "unbiased" robot journalist? Not profitable.

Well, we're getting better and better at this all the time. The body movements and facial expressions are really great, but not quite ready for prime time. Once they are, fit a really great Turing tested CPU in the skull and we're good to go.

WestWorld.

Speaking of which, I'm really pissed there wasn't a second season. But then again, they could hardly do one after they apparently killed off Anthony Hopkins... Great sound effects: I could hear his teeth/the bullet shatter the drinking glass.

Morbidly wondering if a person who commits suicide lives long enough to see the bullet exiting the head (provided the eyes are still intact, of course), or would hear the sound of the bullet, say, breaking a drinking glass as previously noted.

Dayum: I really need to take some time off.
Nice things? Hell no!

BBC wrote:The robot lawyers are here - and they’re winning

Amid the dire - and somewhat overhyped - predictions of occupations that will be decimated by artificial intelligence and automation, there is one crumb of comfort. Yes, lorry drivers, translators and shop assistants are all under threat from the rise of the robots, but at least the lawyers are doomed too. (Some of my best friends are lawyers, honest.)

That at least may be your conclusion when you hear about a fascinating contest that took place last month. It pitched over 100 lawyers from many of London's ritziest firms against an artificial intelligence program called Case Cruncher Alpha.

Both the humans and the AI were given the basic facts of hundreds of PPI (payment protection insurance) mis-selling cases and asked to predict whether the Financial Ombudsman would allow a claim.

In all, they submitted 775 predictions and the computer won hands down, with Case Cruncher getting an accuracy rate of 86.6%, compared with 66.3% for the lawyers.
[…]
Two judges oversaw the competition, Cambridge law lecturer Felix Steffek and Ian Dodd from a company called Premonition, which runs the world's biggest database of legal cases. He says the youthful Case Cruncher team chose the subject for the contest well.

"There's a lot of these cases and the information isn't too complicated," he explained.

"For certain things like this you can ask a machine and it will do it far more speedily and efficiently than a human."

Still weak, for now. But sooner or later someone will unleash software on legal texts/laws where there's undoubtedly much to ferret out (be it only logical inconsistencies).

How Sex Robots Will Annihilate Our Sense Of Reality
The Federalist

...

Sex robot manufacturer Matt McMullen told the Times, “Based on our experiences with thousands of clients, people do use them [sex robots] for sex, but there is something more that exists. We focus on companionship… There are people who are already lonely, and people who live their lives being alone. They work all day and come home to an empty house. This is just offering an alternative to those types of people. They don’t have anyone else.”

Before a sad violin starts playing for all the lonely people—the Eleanor Rigbys longing for the steady but sure companionship of a sex robot—note it is much more depressing to imagine McMullen’s version of his customers than to imagine a bunch of horny idiots who just want to have sex with a humanoid hunk of plastic and rubber.

...

Not a bad article, but it suffers from over-estimation of the existing general grip on reality.

Yachting Monthly wrote:First autonomous ship registered in the UK

The UK Ship Register has signed its first autonomous vessel, C-Worker 7, to the flag.

The unmanned ship can be used under direct control, semi-manned or completely unmanned, and has been built by ASV Global, a leading supplier of unmanned and autonomous marine systems.

C-Worker 7 will be used for subsea positioning, surveying and environmental monitoring work.

The director of the UK Ship Register, Doug Barrow, said that by supporting emerging technologies such as autonomous systems, the register is ‘helping to keep the UK at the forefront of the global maritime industry’.
