People often point out that they can’t help it. They can’t help with the anti-gay bullying, because it says right there in Leviticus, it says right there in Timothy, it says right there in Romans, that being gay is wrong. We can learn to ignore the bullshit about gay people in the Bible the same way we have learned to ignore the bullshit in the Bible about shellfish, about slavery, about dinner, about farming, about menstruation, about virginity, about masturbation. We ignore bullshit in the Bible about all sorts of things. The Bible is a radically pro-slavery document. Slave owners waived Bibles over their heads during the civil war and justified it.

While I totally agree with Dan Savage about this, the fervent anti-gay religionistas will cite the fact that Jesus specifically OKs eating shellfish, but remains mute about that nasty gay sex.

The Catholics have an additional doctrinal anti-gay source in the various Pope's encyclicals, too.

What part of the bible isn't bullshit?

I seem to recall reading that this talk was being given to journalism students.

Nothing says "The Next Generation's Edward R. Murrow" like walking out of a speech in a huff because the speaker said something that you disagreed with.

And I don't just mean religious LIBBERULz.

"Black hat" Jewish orthodoxy even has a centuries old codified system of rationalization for that.

Haven't watched the vid, but is this the one where Savage ridicules kids who walk out of his lecture?
