Ever since the 1970s, the universally acceptable way to refer to blacks is "blacks".
"African American" is OK where the nationality is relevant.

Only in academia and in screwball nationalist circles is there any contention.

Just like most Indians I know are fine with the term "Indian". THough I will occasionally us the term "Native Americcan" if there is a chance that it will be unclear whether I am talking about Indiand from here or Indians from India.

Yeah, that probably wouldn't go over so well.

Hey ed!

Update:
Has Obama lost the all-important white bigot vote?
The Wall Street Journal

...

Lupica offers no evidence to support his contention that swing voters are racially motivated; he is engaged in speculation, or, to put it less charitably, racial stereotyping. Yet his stereotype, while odd, is not logically inconsistent. He imagines that the voters likeliest to swing against Obama are whites who overcame antiblack prejudice to support him four years ago.

Let's imagine what such a voter would be like. He's certainly not a white supremacist or a hater, but rather somebody with comparatively mild prejudices. We imagine him as resembling Archie Bunker from "Archie Bunker's Place," the "All in the Family" spinoff that ran from 1979-83. Carroll O'Connor's character had mellowed considerably since the latter program's origins in the early 1970s, when he declared: "We ain't got a black president . . . 'cause God ain't ready for that yet."

Presented with two otherwise equal candidates, Lupica's notional voter would support a white one over a black one. But McCain's manifest deficiencies outweighed that prejudice. Mitt Romney so far is running a far better campaign than McCain did, and Obama has a lousy record, so the balance is different this time around. If Lupica is right, there is one troubling implication: that the failure of Obama's presidency will reinforce antiblack prejudices by seeming to confirm them.

...

The WSJ column quotes Mike Lupica only to make fun of him, but I can see it. 8)

I'm trying to figure out what McCain's "deficiencies" were that would drive off the "white bigot" vote...

A lot of the older union guys didn't like blacks much, though I wouldn't lump them with the KKK. Think of someone like Archie Bunker, but a little more realistic about his own interests.

I really didn't think about it until I read the WSJ article, and the only guys I personally knew like that were already dead in 2008.

Sort of unknowable stuff, isn't it? They are saying that a hypothetical group who behaved in a certain hypothetical way for certain speculative reasons, may not do so again for reasons that are speculative.

I love "journalism"

It wasn't all guesswork though... the guy made a measurable prediction and tested it.

I remember meeting a new guy at work one day. Nice guy. He was a white guy from South Africa. I got a real kick out of telling those who hadn't met him yet that he was an African American, then watching their bewildered expressions when they met him. :D
