Because it was someone who didn't meet her criteria, it was creepy, in a creepy elevator, with a creepy narrative. Possibly with creepy music playing.
Are you supporting this idea, or claiming that she holds it? I have yet to see any evidence that his general appeal, rather than his behavior, was the problem.

Behavior affects how people respond to you--not just per-determined superficial characteristics.

I am suggesting that due to the wiring of the human brain, if he had met up to her mating standards, the response would probably have been different. Some people forget that humans are just another mammal. Just another ape. We study apes in the wild but pretend the findings don't apply to us.

Hmmm... lets see...

Rebecca Watson is a below-average female. In terms of looks, accomplishments and personality.

She's associated herself with a social/political movement.

She's (allegedly) had sexual relations with an "Alpha" in the movement, Michael Shermer.

She's publicly rejected *all other suitors* in the community via her blog. I believe the term she used was "pathetic".

I've been sympathetic up to a point with you guys; but for fucks sake....

There is no need to also pretend that behavior does not impact one's reaction to being approached.

You sell the idea that there is little to learn about approaching women except to be hot and rich/famous enough for them.

Really, my pedantry on this topic has less to do with my opinion of RW, than that I find this a useless and inaccurate idea that only serves to discourage people that might otherwise find themselves a lot less lonely and frustrated.

After all this we *still* do not have photos of the elevator.

Uh, you are speaking my language here.

In terms of approaching women, the "ElevatorGate" scenario is probably one of the worst scenarios I can think of.

Its a cold approach to start with, against a hostile low-value target with delusions of grandeur/persecution. I certainly wouldn't have done it.

But I'm not EG. Maybe he thinks he's got mad game, maybe it was a spur of the moment thing or maybe (as mentioned) he was just a wee bit tipsy. What he was *not* was pushy or rude, which is where RW's complaint falls apart.

What makes this worse is that, also as I've mentioned, people like Richard Dawkins get hate mail all the time:

RW claim of misogyny in the 'skeptical community' falls flat when she uses these sorts of hate mails as evidence. They are much more likely to be the product of angry theists or simple internet trolls than evidence of any sort of over-reaching trend.

It is a shy elevator that just wishes to be left alone to tend to its garden.

Richard read his hatemails from Christians to display their hypocrisy.

Rebecca reads her hate mails to inflate her sense of importance and self-worth, since she is worthless. She has no value. She is a blogger/podcaster. She is the Harry Knowles of skepticism. Just a dingleberry.

It appears the "hangers on" now run the show.
The whole thing is hilarious. And I love how the writer of the article works very hard to make "skeptic" synonymous with "atheist". But don't worry, skeptics aren't dicks. Hal will even let Republicans be skeptics! No, really! What a terrifically magnanimous thing that is.

So please, no stereotyping of the "skeptical community".

A tempest in Whoville. No one has heard of Rebecca Watson outside of this invisible burg. Most everyone has heard of Richard Dawkins. He has not, therefore, been "torn limb from limb", as much as a handful of geeks wish were the case.

So when does a Fundamentalist Christian get struck down on the road to Damascus?

The only aspect of this silly symphony that bothers me is the supposed relevance of anyone's physical appearance. It's not as if people choose their genetics or the dominant cultural ideals of physical attractiveness.
