Eddie Van Halen

Saw VH at Wembley Stadium back in the day and Eddie did the standard MAD solo when all the other band members left the stage.

After 10 secs every one was like "OOOOOOOOOOMMMMMMMFFFFFFGGGGGGGGGGG THIS IS AWESOME"

After 5 minutes the entire audience were EDDIE....EDDIE...EDDIE..EDDIE...WOOOWW YYYEEAAAAAAAHHH RAAAAHHHHHHH CMAAAANMNNNN

After 8 minutes half the audience were looking at their watches.

After 12 minutes half the audience were in the bar and the other half were all..."Jesus, Ed, get the fuck on with it."

In Honor of Eddie Van Halen, Guitar Virtuoso and Inventor
Here’s another reminder that Edward L. Van Halen, who died today at the age of 65, was an inventor as well as one of the best guitar players in rock history. As I mentioned a while back, in 1985 he applied for a patent on an invention described in the “abstract” section as follows:
  • A supporting device for stringed musical instruments, for example, guitars, banjos, mandolins and the like, is disclosed. The supporting device is constructed and arranged for supporting the musical instrument on the player to permit total freedom of the player’s hands to play the instrument in a completely new way, thus allowing the player to create new techniques and sounds previously unknown to any player. The device, when in its operational position, has a plate which rests upon the player’s leg leaving both hands free to explore the musical instrument as never before. Because the musical instrument is arranged perpendicular to the player’s body, the player has maximum visibility of the instrument’s entire playing surface.
Figure 1 of the application makes this much easier to understand, and it also has to be one of the best patent illustrations in the history of patent illustrations:

Tom Yewcic, 88, played for Boston Patriots 1961-66.
Yewcic and Tom Brady are the only Patriots players who have punted, thrown a touchdown pass, caught a pass, and run for a touchdown.
