Japan to begin collecting ¥1,000 departure tax from next Monday

Japan will start collecting from next Monday a departure tax of ¥1,000 for each person leaving the country by aircraft or ship regardless of nationality.

Under the relevant law enacted last April, the levy will be collected each time an individual leaves the country, and comes on top of airfare, ship fare and travel fees.

The government plans to utilize the revenue from the tax for measures to accommodate more foreign visitors to the country, develop tourism bases and improve immigration procedures, officials said.
[…]
Specifically, the revenue will be used to set up facial recognition gates at airports for speedier immigration procedures, while also promoting the use of multilingual information boards and helping introduce more cashless payment terminals for public transportation.

The number of visitors to Japan has surged in recent years, topping 30 million for the first time ever in 2018.

It's true. I've only come close to choking on my food once or twice in my life, but a piece of mochi was one of them. A bit like eating a piece of rubber, texture-wise. Rubbery clay. Definitely a food you should think about eating and not just eat mindlessly or while distracted by other things.

Just looked it up. 1000 yen is currently 9.33 USD.

So it's about on the level of a bridge toll.

No, what you choked on is not actually called "mochi."

Considering that the cost of the plane ticket is well over $1000 probably at the cheapest, it's really practically nothing.

If they allow gay marriage before they allow joint custody of children after divorce, I’m going to be quite pissed off.

Then again, I’ve heard the theory that Japan does not allow joint custody or even spouses to have separate names after marriage not out of deeply held traditional values as some would have you believe, but rather because it would cause administrative headaches for the bureaucrats who run the county.

As long as homosexuals take the same last name and don’t expect anything new from the government with respect to child custody (adopted or otherwise) after divorce, I think gay marriage has a chance.

Monk’s traffic ticket for driving in robe causes a stir

FUKUI — A case in which a Buddhist monk was given a traffic violation for driving in a ritual robe and allegedly interfering with his safe driving has caused a stir, as the monk and his sect oppose such regulations, saying the rules would stop their daily activities, The Yomiuri Shimbun has learned.

The incident took place in accordance with prefectural traffic regulations, which prohibit driving in clothing that could affect safe driving. However, many monks drive in their robes on a daily basis. The monk who was given the ticket has refused to pay the penalty, saying such regulations stop him from carrying out his memorial services.

Speaking of "Japanese version of" I've been seeing posters for a Japanese version of The Good Wife appearing in train stations lately.

Apparently the premier episode airs this Sunday.

Interesting. I did not see the Japanese Original, but Gram's Me Mum liked it. Interesting if they keep the premise that the lawyer-wife of a disgraced politician goes back to work as he goes to jail . . . in JAPAN!!1!!! [!--Ed.]

Could go in the "Murica" thread:
American woman found with gun on Delta flight denied entry to Japan

CHIBA (TR) – An American woman who was found to be in possession of a gun on a Delta Air Lines flight earlier this month was denied entry to Japan, officials at Narita International Airport said on Friday, reports Sankei Sports (Jan. 11).

The woman, aged around 30s, was found with a pistol and an unspecified amount of live ammunition inside the cabin of the plane prior to its arrival at Narita International Airport on January 3, the officials said.

The matter emerged after the woman confessed to a cabin attendant that she had brought the gun and ammunition onto the flight “by mistake.” The officials believe a lapse in security allowed the woman to board the flight, which originated in Atlanta, Georgia.

After the landing of the plane, the woman was denied entry to Japan. That same day, she was returned to the U.S., the officials said.

Two points. First, Atlanta. Specifically its shitty airport security. I lived there years ago. In fact, my ex-wife had a job at Hartsfield long before 9/11. One evening, while picking her up from work we were walking to one of the less busy entry/exit areas when three or four supervisor types went sprinting by us. As we rounded the corner, we saw the reason. The only two "security" agents on duty were rolling around on the ground fighting, leaving the gate completely unmanned for god* only knows how long.

Second, this woman apparently "remembered" she had the gun mid-flight. At that point, I think I'd be tempted just to take my chances with Japanese customs not finding it. I would have thought she'd get in as much trouble by telling anyone she was carrying it mid-flight than she would if she'd been caught bringing it into Japan.

Seriously, does the story just end there? I have a hard time believing she's not facing any charges in the States. But, if not, she'd better thank Jesus* she was born a woman in the #metoo era, because I doubt a man would get the same break.

In Japan, they would have tossed her ass in jail.

She could at least claim that she did not attempt to bring in an illegal weapon into the country since she surrendered it prior to entering the country.

You are correct about how she was treated by American authorities. It will be "interesting" to see how she was able to board the plane with such and what will happen to all those who failed to discover it.
