Non-loon version: There are so many abandoned airstrips around, all that would be needed for a "secret base" is some decent recon.

are there any sharks in the area? and lasers?
If it's good enough for Nelson, it's quite good enough for me.

It's tropical Asia.

If not sharks, certainly something nasty swimming around. Candiru perhaps.

As for lasers ... :BigGrin3:

If there is a Candiru in the Indian Ocean he is not only VERY lost he is probably dead of salt poisoning since the candiru is a freshwater fish that lives in the Amazon.

As for the wreckage, I am not getting too excited about it. By my count this is the third time they thought they spotted some sign of the plane.

So your "theory" is the candiru tank broke when the plane hard landed? :notsure:

Yeah, but by that time the tigers who had gotten loose on the plane had already eaten everybody

"They" have done a good job of covering up the last radio transmission from the plane where a man was heard in the background to exclaim "I'm sick of these motherfuckin' tigers on this motherfuckin' pla....aaaaaah" followed by a roar.

There's your smoking gun right there.

Breaking News: Plane still missing!

MSNBC anchor was critical of CNN Breaking news banner exclaiming that very thing. Bitchfight broke out. Foxnews re-continued to lead the market. Yada.

But seriously, officially two weeks now and still no plane.

Satellite searches reveal more prospects, but a needle in a haystack would be easy by comparison.

No ransom demands. No terrorist claims. No real evidence of any wrong doing at all, so far as I'm concerned. Speculation from competent sources demands a mindful cubbyhole for those potentialities, but I'm not going to marry any theory just yet. Newish rumors that the plane was carrying a pallet of laptop batteries, which could have caught fire, and so, you know, maybe that.

Weirdness is Worthy of updating, so here we are.

Considering that there were reports that the plane turned west and then northwest, it makes sense that the whole world is searching in the southeast.

CNN Talks About Missing Plane ... Using Toy Planes

Yes, because there is literally nothing left to say about flight MH370 that hasn't already been said, CNN is having its anchors try to guess what happened to it while making vague gestures at a toy. Otherwise they would be forced to admit what a terrible, stupid idea 24-hour news coverage is.
Such potential!

It does kind of. Here's why

Image

The engine health transponders send keep-alive pings to an inmarsat satellite in geostationary orbit.

These pings contain a time stamp.
The Inmarsat position is known precisely.
By calculating the difference between time sent and time received, they can plot a rough distance which is accurate to the resolution of the time stamp, 1 millisecond.
When geographically mapped, it appears as a curve.
The red line represents that curve.
The comm link is (more or less) omnidirectional so they don't know where on that curve it is.

It is much thicker than shown since the time recorded in ping packet isn't that accurate. Since the time stamp has a resolution of 1 msec, and light travels roughly 186 miles in one millisecond, that's how thick the red line really is.

But they know the last ping recorded was on that path. Logic dictates it is furthest from it's starting point, but excludes meandering and illogically whatnots.

Areas to the north are mostly land with significant radar coverage. But they're looking there too.
That's why they're looking [around] there.

Yeah, I know, I was being a troll. It makes sense in light of what they're saying about autopilot.

If so, this is some serious Bond-Villian level evil shit.
That report was apparently bogus:

Well this is really fucking cool!

http://www.cnn.com/2014/03/24/world/asi ... le_sidebar

Engineers were able to figure roughly where the flight was headed by measuring the doppler of the signals they received. That's some mutha-fugging information-theory shit right there, I tell you what!

Or they could, you know, cover something else. Perish the thought.

If they're still covering it, it must be because their ratings are up when they cover it.

I'm surprised that anyone other than the families concerned is still interested, at least until they find a piece of wreckage.

They 'called it' yesterday, saying it crashed in the IO.
"It is therefore with deep sadness and regret that I must inform you that, according to this new data, flight MH370 ended in the southern Indian Ocean.
But still no hard evidence.

They have (a little less than) two weeks before the sonar pinger runs out of batteries. After that, not a hope worth having.

I am not surprised at all. Everyone loves a mystery. And now that the Malaysian government has (as Rob put it) 'called it' I suspect you will see the interest die down as it becomes harder for people to project their own ideas/fantasies/what-have-you onto the otherwise blank slate they mystery presented.

Now it will go into the phase where those who want to keep the mystery alive for whatever reason will start denying any evidence that is found. Calling it a cover up, etc.

Particularly if we do not have a definitive reason for it. Absent a proven story the storytellers will imagine.
