Even though that's The Onion, isn't that what actually happened?

Sorry no artwork, but a good précis of Bullboa (scroll down a bit).

Not anymore than happened in WW2.

There was logic (of a kind) in everyone's choices.

Though he recanted in the Paddy Wagon, the drunk did declare war on Ireland.

Trivia question: approximately how long does it take a person to fall a mile?

About 20 seconds, but it would vary depending on your air resistance.

I was real big on Superman from about age 3 up until puberty.

I remember my father reading this aloud one to me, complete with a phoney Mexican accent in the appropriate places.

And he was a real leftist too. A foreign country indeed.

However one day when I was alone in the living room and earnestly reciting the opening to the Superman TV show (as if it were the Pledge of Allegiance or something), my father walked into the room and told me that being saved by Superman is not the American way. :coolspecs:

It just occurred to me.

Pinochet throwing his more prominent political enemies out of helicopters.

Did he get the idea from Superman comics and then wait for years to do what he always dreamed of? :o

Anaxagoras is correct that it depends on air resistance. A skydiver can control air resistance by varying body position and by wearing different drag inducing jumpsuits.

The average terminal velocity of a person in a stable stomach-to-earth body position is between 120 to 130 mph.

Image

Other body positions can reach upwards of 180 mph terminal velocity.

Image

And it's pretty much the same whether you are in Asia, Africa, or Salt Lake City.

I once learned the hard way that when going that fast, you want to ensure your helmet is on securely.

In an average 30 second skydive, a skydiver exits the aircraft at 7500 feet AGL and deploys the parachute at 2500 feet. The average 60 second skydive begins at 12500 feet.

A tumbling person — or one who is falling semi-conscious in an uncontrolled back-to-earth position — might easily fall a mile in only 20 seconds.

Wikipedia page on Grahame Donald
Donald also became famous for his miraculous escape from death having fallen from his Sopwith Camel at 6,000 feet (1,800 m) in 1917. On a summer's afternoon he attempted a new manoeuvre in his Sopwith Camel and flew the machine up and over, and as he reached the top of his loop, hanging upside down, his safety belt snapped and he fell out. He was not wearing a parachute as a matter of policy. Incredibly, the Camel had continued its loop downwards, and Donald landed on its top wing. He grabbed it with both hands, hooked one foot into the cockpit and wrestled himself back in, struggled to take control, and executed "an unusually good landing". In an interview given 55 years later he explained, "The first 2,000 feet passed very quickly and terra firma looked damnably 'firma'. As I fell I began to hear my faithful little Camel somewhere nearby. Suddenly I fell back onto her."
