My phone is on Verizon fool. I can't get the tuner to open dipshit.
You could just root your phone and get it to work that way.
Furthermore, no I don't listen to commercial FM radio. But, I do have to check on several signals occasionally because it's my fucking job. Asshole! :P
Probably a dedicated device would be superior for that.
BTW: The streaming signal is a totally different path than the terrestrial signal. In simpler terms: One can work while the other is fucked. They do not depend on each other.

Dipshit.
I see your point, but IMO having an FM receiver on the phone to begin with seems pointless.
Actually, it's part of the Qualcom LTE modem used by almost all phones. But Sparks is right that the providers lock out that feature. However, using an app like Next Radio
https://nextradioapp.com/supported-devices/
will get you the FM regardless. Even Verizon in most cases.

It's an odd and dick move by Verizon to block something via software but I also don't think radio is that used on cell phones to begin with. IMO it's no different to complain about difficulty of having a radio reception on TV -- Why would you want to?

If sparks wasn't such a crotchety old dipshit there could have been a simple conversation. But he takes offense at people asking questions for some reason.

The point is the hardware allows it for some reason, unlike picking up radio stations with your TV.

Well yes but my question is a 2-parter:
1) Why the heck is it on the phone in the first place?
2) Who the heck actually uses radio on their cellphone?

1) Because it's not just a phone. It's a radio AND a floorwax. :)

2) Ask sparks.

1) because some countries (i.e. Mexico for one) mandate that functionality and lots of countries (i.e. USA for one) have been threatening to for years. Qualcom just shrugged and put it in; I suspect the cost is close to zero.

2) I might during emergencies or something. But really never.

You can listen to the radio when you have no cell reception.

Of course, you can do that a thousand times better with a real radio - but who carries real radios, or real cameras any more? The modern attitude is that if you can't do something on your phone, then it's not worth doing.

I might be spoiled in that I live in a large city where such a thing never happens thus it puzzles me why someone might want one.

I wouldn't go that far as to conclude that. But thank you for some perspective.

A cell phone that also transmits radio frequencies (walkie talkie/CB bands) and receives radio frequencies would be ..... fucking awesome.

They sell third party devices, that let you transmit and receive with no cell service, and no wifi, so it's not like it couldn't be done. Yes, data will travel over radio frequencies

Philistine! :) I'm crotchety and pissed off because my phone has a radio in it, but Verizon says no, stream the radio station and burn up your data.

Fuck them.
