Gas-powered Motorcycles
http://douglas-self.com/MUSEUM/TRANSPOR ... asbike.htm
This idea for running motorcycles from coal gas (town gas) which contained hydrogen, carbon monoxide, methane, and ethylene, surfaced towards the end of WW1, when petrol shortages were starting to bite. It's clearly a very unwieldy set-up, and whether more than one example was made is uncertain.

Here's a somewhat outlandish "gazogène" Citroën (1938):

Gazogène converts the coal (or whatever) to coal gas on the fly.

Nowhere near as cool as hauling around a balloon full of coal gas. ;)

↑ Hmmm… I wonder how far you got on that (apparently un-pressurized) container.

The coolness point is debatable. Think of it:
  • your car could proudly show a coal locomotive in its ancestry;
  • out of fuel? No problem, just gather twigs, dry grass, branches, &c., from the roadside.

My understanding is that the Eszett (ß) indicates that the preceding vowel is long, which is certainly not the case here, so if this is not a fake, then Guinness' ad department screwed up.

Won't happen again here. Nowadays the lady on the right would pull a gun, shoot the other lady dead and take her meat.

I think it's Erasmus who, in his book on Civility in Children, advised the young prince it was meant for to never make eye contact with adults as it could be understood as a challenge.
