Very nice colorizing. Much more betterest than the bw original. It's a little more foreboding actually. I like it.

And here my initial thought was it was a painting.

I want that painting.

That's not how I remember Times Square in the 70's and 80's.

I think the correct answer is Cleveland. :)

Searching for the correct spelling of another name led to this gem of history:

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Le_P%C3%A9tomane
Joseph Pujol (June 1, 1857 – August 8, 1945), best known by his stage name Le Pétomane (/ləˈpɛtəmeɪn/, French pronunciation: [ləpetɔman]), was a French flatulist (professional farter) and entertainer. He was famous for his remarkable control of the abdominal muscles, which enabled him to seemingly fart at will. His stage name combines the French verb péter, "to fart" with the -mane, "-maniac" suffix, which translates to "fartomaniac". The profession is also referred to as "flatulist", "farteur", or "fartiste".[1]

I'm pretty sure we had color in 1977...but I could have been dreaming. <--On some level in my head that was funny.

Seems to me it would be unusual for such a mundane pic to be taken in BW. So the original poster probably converted it to make it feel more distant in time, which is appropriate for this thread. I tried a reverse image search looking for the original color photo but google doesn't show any similar image that has color.

Which is a useful thing to know...we didn't have this issue in the past.

ETA: And THEN it occurred to me (30 minutes later) that newspaper photographers probably used BW film almost exclusively since back then (and even now somewhat) photos in papers were almost always in BW and that the printing process was probably better with the smaller grain ... or something. So this was taken by a newspaper photographer. Now I can work out why Norway has such safe roads! :notsure:

Jamaica, Fourth of July, 1970

This Jamaica is a neighborhood in NYC.

I lived in NYC in 1970. :oldman:

Fancy thinking of 1970 as the "good old days".
And the author doesn't even minimize the problems of the time. :|

The London Guide and Stranger's Safeguard against the Cheats, Swindlers, and Pickpockets (1819)

When a stranger first arrives in this overgrown city and finds upon alighting at the inn, that he has still some miles perhaps to go before he can see his friends he is naturally anxious for advice how to reach them in safety, with his luggage. But if this be the ease with those who have got friends, what is the dread of such as have a home to seek, business to look after, or place of service to obtain, without a friend to guide their steps, or a candid person to warn them of their danger; to tell them of the precipices, pit falls, and moral turpitude, of a large proportion of the population of this great metropolis?

To supply the place of a living friend, and in some cases to perform the necessary part of one, by directing the stranger in the choice of companions, and what characters he should avoid, I have compiled these sheets; in which will be found "all I know about the matter," and all I could "learn out" by "fine-drawing" of others.
