Seems to me that most people, thinking or not, would automatically assume (erroneously in this case) that the bars are drawn to scale with the cars. It takes extra effort for a thinking person to correct that initial visual misperception, assuming they are skeptical enough to bother thinking about it.

To be more specific, thinking only come into play if a person feels the need to apply it, which in this case requires a good sense of skepticism, cynicism, or mistrust.

Failure to draw graphs to scale is a common error (sometimes intentional) and is an easy way for liars to deceive with statistics. Most people, thinking or not, often fail to notice this error in a graph until either it is pointed out to them, or their skepticism kicks in and then they apply some thinking.

See for example, the classic book How to Lie with Statistics.

Sloppiness not deliberate deception in this case.

Illinois, statistician?

Oh I see. Fastest growing.

So up to 6 from 2 (that's whole numbers) or some such.

Here's my thought: Why is the slope negative in some parts of the graph (upper left, for example)?

Do you need to post that in the Nyarl Was Right Thread?

You know there are rules about posting in the wrong thread!

When the linky starts by forcing an answer to a question, I have to say bullshit. Even if it is PBS.

Cheap bastards.
