Seems a bit premature to compare Covid-19 to the others yet. Current number of deaths over 7000 and still rising. It'll probably surpass the 2009-10 swine flu before it's all done, and I don't remember there being nearly as much panic over that one as this time.
The Hong Kong Flu seems recent and large-scale enough to be panic-worthy yet I've only ever heard reference to it as just a particularly bad flu season. I am not sure I understand what made Covid-19 worthy of such a world-wide reaction.

Fifty times as many dead, according to most predictions for an unchecked pandemic.

And that's based on a mortality rate of 1%. It will be lower in developed countries and higher in the rest.

What point the graphic maker was trying to convey?

Italy has 60m people while the US has 320m.

https://i.imgur.com/QTUInAe.png

U.S. is 14 per million.
Italy is 468 per million.
https://www.worldometers.info/coronavirus/

P.s. Not that I particularly trust that website. Their numbers seem to be all over the place.

The growth paths being remarkably similar.

I don't think it's the site so much as countries being inaccurate, which is understandable. Note that Iran hasn't yet a single case in the "serious" column. You're fine, or you're dead.

You're right, Italy has a much smaller population, but if you stay on the same growth path, you'll end up with the same percentage dead.

There's no doubt shutting the door on China was sensible - they spread this through skifields to start with and it's spread from there. Italy had a head start as a result.

I think it's the clamping down by China which got the media rolling.

Assuming that's accurate, I think we can safely say that at least on the global scale, we're not reducing emissions at all, and if anything, they appear to be increasing. The bump seems to be shifting to the right as fast or faster than 20 years ago.

Assuming I'm reading that graph correctly, comparing it to reported numbers so far in the U.S., there are a lot more cases but also a lot fewer deaths than predicted.

Either God's punishment ...
... or number of cases correlates with population density. :coolspecs:

Why can't it be both?

Embrace the power of "and" Abdul!

On a related note, looking at that map above, I'm liking my chances if I'm in West Virginia. Upper Michigan, too.

They just need to keep the rest of those north-eastern pukes out.
