It's actually very simple. Pretty much nobody lives in the white areas of Nevada. You can't have a disaster without people. It's the same reason the oceans have no stats.

  • what's the dark blob between Colorado & New Mexico (and a tiny part of Oklahoma)?
  • how come the Bible Belt seems to go so far up North?

That middle belt represents flyover country; very low density populations, lots and lots of farmers.

While the resolution is by county, it's a little misleading because some counties have very low populations. That black blob in SE Colorado is Las Animas County. Population density is 4 people/m2 (and two of them are Mexican-style Catholics.

Monday through Saturday they tend their fields. Church on Sunday may be the only socialization they get.
