World Wrestling Entertainment resumed its live televised shows Monday at its facility in Orlando without fans present. After weeks of airing taped pro wrestling matches, WWE received permission last week with a signed order from Florida's Emergency Management Director. The order says "employees at a professional sports and media production with a national audience" are exempt from a stay-at-home order as long as "the location is closed to the general public."

The order was signed April 9. At a press conference Monday, Orange County Mayor Jerry Demings said when Florida Governor Ron DeSantis ordered a statewide lockdown April 1, at first, WWE was not exempted. "With some conversation with the governor's office regarding the governor's order, they were deemed an essential business," Demings said. "And so therefore, they were allowed to remain open."

Richard Hamilton was having a bad day Thursday. He didn’t want to work, he told Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office investigators.

That’s why he called in a bomb threat that morning to Wellington’s water treatment center, where he was working with a construction crew.

Authorities arrested Hamilton, a 36-year-old Miramar resident, on a charge of making a bomb threat during the coronavirus pandemic, a national emergency. A judge set his bail at $10,000 during a hearing Friday at the Palm Beach County Jail.

Miami goes 7 weeks without a murder for first time since 1957

MIAMI (Gray News/CNN) - For the first time since 1957, the city of Miami went at least seven weeks without a single murder. However, murders in the surrounding county have increased slightly this year.

The Miami Police Department released the statistics. The city did not report a homicide from Feb. 17 to April 12, its longest streak in 63 years.

While stay-at-home orders due to the coronavirus pandemic have played a role, Police Chief Jorge Colina says the trend started in mid-February before social distancing was put in place.

“Why? Honestly, I don’t know. I’m just grateful it continues to go down the way it has,” said Colina in a Miami Herald interview from home, where he is recovering from COVID-19.

Indeed, I suggest The Nutcracker. No joke it really works.

DeSantis describes Florida as ‘God’s waiting room’ at COVID-19 briefing

Governor was addressing number of nursing homes in the state and coronavirus pandemic

ORLANDO, Fla. – Gov. Ron DeSantis used ground zero, nursing homes and God’s waiting room all in one sentence at his press briefing on coronavirus Sunday, raising the eyebrows and the ire of a few.

“Florida is ground zero for the nursing home, we’re God’s waiting room,” DeSantis said Sunday. “We have a huge number of facilities, a huge number of residents.” The term is a decades-old joke about the amount of retirees that move to Florida; it isn’t complimentary.

Florida Cancer Center Admits to Violating U.S. Antitrust Laws, Agrees to Pay More Than $120 Million in Penalties

In the first case of its kind, the Antitrust Division of the U.S. Department of Justice (“DOJ”) announced that it had entered into a deferred prosecution agreement (DPA) with Florida Cancer Specialists & Research Institute LLC (FCS). Specifically, FCS admitted that it violated the federal antitrust laws by participating in a criminal antitrust conspiracy to allocate medical oncology and radiation oncology treatments provided to cancer patients in Southwest Florida for almost two decades. Pursuant to the DPA, FCS agreed to pay the statutory maximum criminal penalty of $100 million, and to cooperate with the DOJ in an ongoing investigation into market allocation in the oncology industry, as well as other conditions. In addition, the Florida Attorney General announced a parallel civil settlement with FCS, requiring FCS to pay more than $20 million in disgorgement for the company’s violations of state antitrust and unfair trade practices laws in connection with the scheme. The announcement of a federal criminal action and the imposition of more than $120 million in fines and disgorgement is a bold and significant statement from federal and state authorities that healthcare providers across the country will be severely punished for engaging in anticompetitive agreements.

Among the largest independent oncology and hematology medical practices in the United States, FCS has approximately 100 offices and more than 200 affiliated doctors.

State unemployment fund earning millions in interest, as Floridians wait on unemployment checks

Thousands still waiting on unemployment checks

TAMPA, Fla. -- More than a month after a record number of out-of-work Floridians flooded the state’s broken unemployment website, I-Team Investigator Kylie McGivern found Florida has collected more in interest on its largely untapped unemployment fund than any other state.

Florida’s unemployment fund earned nearly $25 million in interest in the first three months of this year, according to an accounting record obtained by the I-Team.

While other states across the country saw their unemployment funds shrink as checks were quickly mailed out to people who lost their jobs due to the coronavirus, Florida was the only state in March that was taking in more money than it was paying out in unemployment checks.

The $4 billion unemployment trust fund has continued to swell, as Floridians struggle to get the state and federal unemployment checks they are owed.

FDLE releases list of COVID-19 deaths. Top medical examiner calls it a sham.

Acting under intense pressure from a coalition of Florida news organizations and open-government advocates, the state Wednesday evening released a list of every Florida fatality documented by a medical examiner resulting from the coronavirus pandemic.

The information was so riddled with holes, however, that it sparked as many questions as answers.

Missing from the data set were the names of those who have perished from COVID-19, the illness caused by coronavirus infections, the probable cause of death (there can be multiple factors) and the circumstances of the person’s demise.

Several news organizations, including the Miami Herald, had for weeks sought access to the list, which is compiled by individual medical examiners and maintained by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. Earlier the state had been providing it.

The head of the Florida Medical Examiner’s Commission, which governs the state’s 21 medical examiners, has insisted the information — including the names — is subject to disclosure under the state’s public records law. The administration of Gov. Ron DeSantis, which oversees state health regulators, has warned the examiners to keep the information secret.

“The Department of Health is telling the medical examiners it cannot release this information that the medical examiners have been releasing on a regular basis,” said Barbara Petersen, president emeritus of the First Amendment Foundation, an open-government watchdog in Tallahassee.

“For whatever reason, our governor is trying to hide information — first about nursing homes, and now from medical examiners. They are trying to paint a rosy picture by refusing to provide us accurate information that allows us to make informed decisions about the health and safety of our families,” Petersen said.

“It’s a disservice to the citizens of the state of Florida.”
