Why American Farmers Are Hacking Their Tractors With Ukrainian Firmware
Update:
New demand for very old farm tractors specifically because they're low tech

Farmers are increasingly sick of high-tech tractors that are expensive to buy and usually impossible to fix yourself due to their integrated digital technology. According to the Minnesota Star Tribune, "Tractors manufactured in the late 1970s and 1980s are some of the hottest items in farm auctions across the Midwest these days." To be sure, the farmers buying these old machines aren't luddites. In fact, they often customize and retrofit them with contemporary tech like GPS for automatic steering.

‘1000 Years of Darkness’ Will Begin If Mississippi Elects Its First Black Senator, According to Its Governor

So I guess Mississippi could possibly elect a Final Fantasy villain to the Senate this year? At least, that is if you believe Mississippi Governor Phil Bryant.

Deep South Voice writes that the governor took to Twitter last weekend and said: “If Mike Espy and the liberal Democrats gain the senate we will take that first step into a thousand years of darkness.” Interesting word choice when describing the consequences of Mississippi electing its first black Senator in over 139 years. Even more interesting when you realize he’s doing this in support of Senator Cindy Hyde-Smith. Remember her? She was the lady that said she would be front row at a public lynching. Yeah, folks, they racist-racist.

Child molester’s wife sues Mormon church for $9.5 million, says husband is in prison because clergy reported his confession

The wife of an Oregon man serving a 15-year prison sentence for sexually abusing the couple’s daughter has filed a $9.5 million lawsuit against The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, saying a clergy member violated a promise of confidentiality by reporting her husband to authorities.

The husband told a local church panel about the molestation in 2016 to “repent for his sins” under the eyes of God and to seek spiritual healing “to bring peace within his life and family,” the lawsuit says. Instead, he was arrested and charged in 2017 and convicted in 2018 of four counts of second-degree sexual abuse.

The couple were part of a ward in the Marion County town of Stayton, home to about 8,100 residents 15 miles southeast of Salem.

In addition to herself, the woman also listed four of her children as plaintiffs, saying they all have been deprived of her husband’s “companionship, society, love, affection” and financial support. Not listed is the couple’s fifth child, who was molested by her father over four years when she was a pre-teen and teenager, according to criminal case records.

The lawsuit seeks $9.5 million for the family’s emotional distress and lost income and $40,000 for the money spent on a criminal defense lawyer to represent the husband on the child molestation charges.

First human composting site set for Seattle

SEATTLE — Recompose is building its first human composting location in SODO.

The company will be the first of its kind in the world and is set to open in spring 2021.

Katrina Spade, the CEO of Recompose, came up with the idea more than seven years ago when she was contemplating her future. "We have a ton of interest. It's really exciting," Spade said.

She realized livestock have been composted by farmers for years. She was looking for an alternative for humans, so she teamed up with the WSU Soil Science Department. They used the bodies of six human donors and proved it is safe and effective for humans, as well.

The law she helped pass goes into effect in May 2020.

Spade worked with Alan Maskin at Seattle design firm Olson Kundig to create the space for Recompose.

Olson Kundig just finished the $100 million remodel of the Space Needle.

“Paving decisions” in Atlanta

...
In their headlong search for modernity through mobility, American urbanites made a decision to destroy the living environments of nineteenth-century neighborhoods by converting their gathering places into traffic jams, their playgrounds into motorways, and their shopping places into elongated parking lots. These paving decisions effectively made obsolete many of urban America’s older neighborhoods.

From 2 years ago:
Teacher Deyshia Hargrave was questioning the school board how they can vote to give the superintendent a raise when school employees have not gotten a raise in years. Security officer from the parish Marshal’s Office told her to leave the room and he would soon arrest her in the hall and call the city police and put her in a patrol unit. The school board members in the video are (left to right) Laura Lebeouf, Chris Hebert, School Board President Anthony Fontana (doing most of the talking), Superintendent Jerome Puyau and school board member Chris Gautreaux.

(Action starts at 7:20.)

Follow-up, one year later:
Vermilion Parish teacher files lawsuit over 2018 meeting arrest

A middle school teacher who was forcibly removed from a Vermilion Parish School Board meeting last year has filed a civil lawsuit over the incident.

Deyshia Hargrave and her attorneys named the school board and Abbeville City Marshal’s deputy Reggie Hilts as defendants.

According to the suit, board member Chris Gautreaux warned Hilts beforehand that the Jan. 8, 2018 meeting was going to be a “hot one.” The agenda included approval of a substantial pay raise for Vermilion Parish Superintendent Jerome Puyau.

Despite being hired by the school board to provide security at the meeting, Hilts allegedly had never read Louisiana’s open meetings law or board meeting policies, according to the suit. He also was allegedly never trained on properly handling such meetings, the suit alleges.

“The board could have prevented the actions of Sgt. Hilts but failed to do so,” the suit states.

One more year later:
Vermilion Parish Schools names interim superintendent

ABBEVILLE, La. (AP) — A Louisiana parish school district has named an interim superintendent, less than a month after a lawsuit by the former system leader was dropped.

Vermilion Parish School District board members approved Brad Prudhomme’s nomination to the post this week, news outlets reported. Prudhomme has worked for the school district as supervisor of Child Welfare and Attendance.

He takes the place of Jerome Puyau, who served as superintendent from 2013 until his resignation in December. Puyau remains employed by the district as consultant of the superintendent and will maintain his nearly $149,000 salary until September when he is eligible for retirement, according to an agreement between he and Vermilion Schools.

Puyau filed a federal lawsuit against the district and school board members in September, according to his lawyer. The suit argued his civil rights were violated when he was suspended amid allegations of public concern about his behavior and management style, The Daily Advertiser reported.

The school board also filed a lawsuit asking a state judge to force Puyau to comply with their decision to suspend him.

Both lawsuits had been dropped by last month, according to a statement by the board. It said both parties had decided to “resolve their differences in an amicable fashion.”

First woman Muslim chaplain commissioned in the US military

(RNS) — The U.S. Air Force commissioned its first Muslim woman chaplain candidate last month, marking the first time the U.S. military will have a female chaplain of the Islamic faith.

Saleha Jabeen became a second lieutenant in a December ceremony at the Catholic Theological Union in Chicago.

“The fact is America is a place where the Constitution guarantees your freedom to embrace or abstain from religious ideals, and the Chaplain Corps, which Jabeen just entered, exists to ensure every Airman has a religious freedom advocate. This is a big day not just for Muslims, but for persons of all faiths,” said Maj. Gen. Steven Schaick, Air Force chief of chaplains, in a statement published on the Air Force’s website on Friday (Jan. 10).

“I could not be more proud of our Air Force for being willing to commission and embrace the first female Imam in the Department of Defense.”

Jabeen’s path to the chaplaincy has included graduating from North Park University, an evangelical Christian school in Chicago, in 2009, and the Catholic theological school, where she was the first Muslim woman chosen by fellow students as valedictorian for their 2014 class, according to a bio she provided to Religion News Service.

She served in the U.S. Army Reserve from 2016 to 2018, acting as a lay representative for the Islamic faith when a Muslim chaplain was not available.

Kansas man wants to settle ugly custody battle with ‘trial by combat’ with Japanese swords
A Kansas man has thrown down the gauntlet to his ex-wife and her attorney — seeking court permission to settle their child custody case “on the field of battle” with a sword fight.

David Ostrom, 40, claims in court papers that ex-wife Bridgette Ostrom, 38, and her attorney, Matthew Hudson, have already “destroyed (him) legally” in their ongoing legal battle in her hometown in Iowa.

“I now wish to give them the chance to meet me on the field of battle, where I will REND THEIR SOULS from their … bodies,” Ostrom wrote in the filing, according to the Carroll Times Herald.

He asked the judge for a three-month delay so he could obtain Japanese samurai swords ready for his planned combat.

Historic victory: Sikhs to be counted as separate ethnic group in USA census 2020

Image

WASHINGTON, D.C: On January 6, 2020, a follow-up meeting at San Diego State University with the U.S. Census Bureau leadership was conducted as a part of an on-going series of meetings since 2010 asking for the Sikhs to be recognized as a separate ethnic group. UNITED SIKHS today is proud to announce that the United States 2020 Census will include coding for Sikhs, which means that Sikh Americans will be counted as a separate ethnic group. This announcement is a milestone for America's Sikh Community, as this will be the first time the minority group will be counted and coded in the decennial U.S. Census that is conducted every 10 years.

Islamic Center of Cleveland Opens New Free Health Clinic to Help Serve Uninsured

Image

What was once a storage facility on the Islamic Center of Cleveland campus in Parma has been transformed into a new free health clinic for all.
Quietly open now for the past couple weeks, the Cleveland Ibn Sina Clinic was developed by the Northeast Ohio Muslim community to provide health services for any person who is uninsured or underinsured.

"Healthcare is not a privilege for some, it is a fundamental human right,’ is not just a slogan but the very foundation of our mission,” Dr. Mansoor Ahmed, Medical Director of CISC, said in a statement. He is joined by more than 20 local physicians who have signed on to volunteer their time at the clinic.

“There are far too many people in our communities who do not have the medical coverage they need and are reluctant to seek the medical care that they need," Ahmed said. "This must change and by joining the ranks of the Ohio Association of Free Clinics, we want to do our part to realize the dream of everyone having the same healthcare services offered to them, as any other human being.”

National Archives Blurred Out Anti-Trump Messages In Women's March Photo

An official told The Washington Post it was only a "promotional display." Critics said that didn't make the changes OK.

In a stunning revelation, officials of the National Archives have admitted that a photo of the 2017 Women’s March was altered to blur out signs with messages critical of President Donald Trump and words referring to the female anatomy, The Washington Post reported.

Changes to the photo, displayed in an archives exhibit marking the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage, included blocking out the name “Trump” in a sign that read “God Hates Trump.” The resulting message said simply: “God Hates.” The president’s name was also deliberately blurred in a sign reading “Trump & GOP — Hands Off Women.”

Words on other signs referring to female genitals were also altered, according to the Post. The word “vagina” was obliterated in a sign reading: “If my vagina could shoot bullets, it’d be less REGULATED.” The word “pussy” was removed from another message reading: “This Pussy Grabs Back.” The latter sign was a reference to Trump’s recorded boast about getting away with grabbing women “by the pussy.”

At least four signs were altered by the federal agency that touts itself as “the nation’s record keeper,” according to the Post.

“As a non-partisan, non-political federal agency, we blurred references to the President’s name on some posters, so as not to engage in current political controversy,” archives spokeswoman Miriam Kleiman said in a statement to the newspaper.

As for eliminating references to female genitals, those words could be perceived as inappropriate, according to Kleiman.

The picture by Getty Images photographer Mario Tama, which was blown up to 49 inches by 69 inches for the exhibit, was taken at the Women’s March in Washington on Jan. 21, 2017, the day after Trump’s inauguration.

David Ferriero, the archivist of the United States appointed in 2009 by President Barack Obama, reportedly participated in talks about the display and supported the decision to change the photo.

Furious critics complained that the National Archives is supposed to be a reliable record of reality.
