'Game changing' tuberculosis vaccine a step closer

A vaccine which could "revolutionise" tuberculosis treatment has been unveiled by researchers.

It is hoped the vaccine will provide long-term protection against the disease, which kills 1.5 million people around the world each year.

The highly contagious disease is caused by bacteria, and the current vaccine, the BCG jab, is not very effective.

However, while initial trials have proved successful, the vaccine is still a few years away from being licensed.

The team of researchers, who come from all over the world, revealed the vaccine, which is made up of proteins from bacteria which trigger an immune response, during a global summit on lung health in the southern Indian city of Hyderabad on Tuesday.

It has already cleared a critical phase of clinical trials and been tested on more than 3,500 adults in TB endemic regions of South Africa, Kenya and Zambia, researchers said.

It takes a village to raise a child. Apparently this applies to kids on overcrowded trains as well.

Antibiotic kills bacteria that causes Lyme disease [in mice]

After screening thousands of drugs, researchers have found one that completely eliminates the bacteria that causes Lyme disease, a study with mice shows.

For decades, the routine treatment for Lyme disease has been standard antibiotics, which usually kill off the infection. But for up to 20% of people with the tick-borne illness, the antibiotics don’t work, and lingering symptoms of muscle pain, fatigue, and cognitive impairment can continue for years—sometimes indefinitely.

The new findings suggest the drug azlocillin not only kills off the disease-causing bacteria Borrelia burgdorferi at the onset of the illness, but could also effectively for treating patients infected with drug-tolerant bacteria that may cause lingering symptoms.

“This compound is just amazing,” says Jayakumar Rajadas, assistant professor of medicine and director of the Biomaterials and Advanced Drug Delivery Laboratory at the Stanford University School of Medicine and senior author of the paper, which appears in Scientific Reports. “It clears the infection without a lot of side effects.”

“We are hoping to repurpose it as an oral treatment for Lyme disease. We have been screening potential drugs for six years,” says lead author Venkata Raveendra Pothineni, a PhD working with Rajadas.

“We’ve screened almost 8,000 chemical compounds. We have tested 50 molecules in the dish. The most effective and safest molecules were tested in animal models. Along the way, I’ve met many people suffering with this horrible, lingering disease. Our main goal is to find the best compound for treating patients and stop this disease.”

Evidences?

Or just extrapolation from the toilet paper situation?

Extrapolation from going to the store and coming away with very little. Out of everything, hamburger, ricearonI, anything canned, very little produce.

There is nothin to be had

Worse than here I guess. As of yesterday anyway.

I'll take a look at my local Walmart tomorrow and report back.

We are fucked. We are all going in a starvation diet. I guess the people that bought the stores out will get a week or two before the rest of us. Good for them

Food as such is not scarce, so there's no famine.

Perhaps the government will have to step in.

What about McDonalds? I mean, it's not great but better than starvation. Or are they closed too?

Worse than here I guess. As of yesterday anyway.

I'll take a look at my local Walmart tomorrow and report back.
Early morning shopping report, Cook County northwest of Chicago:

Executive summary -- Some signs of panic buying, but still first world territory and nothing even hyperbolically describable as a famine.

Walmart:
  • The usual plentiful amount of fresh produce on display up front. Upon inspection some items sold out, but that may just be because it was so early in the morning.
  • Also (almost right up front) plenty of baked goods.
  • Limits on toilet paper sales: Two per customer. That is two eight-roll packs of Cottonelle. They were openly stacked on pallets and nobody fighting over them. The usual shelves for toilet paper were mostly empty, but I scored the last of their Scott Tissue (eight rolls).
  • Laundry detergent sold out.
  • Paper towels sold out.
  • Canned meat and fish of all types sold out. Nobody hoarding canned veggies.
  • Nobody hoarding frozen food of any description.
  • Very low on pasta and rice but not sold out. I'm guessing the aftermath of previous panic buying that is over.
  • The store was low on milk (one of the items I bought). Could be the early morning thing.
  • Odds and ends of empty shelves here and there, but plenty of food around it.
Shop and Save:
Note: Better quality produce than Walmart and almost as cheap. Better selection of "ethnic" foods.
  • All out of toilet paper for a while. Sign on the empty shelf admonishing ninnies to get a grip.
  • Plenty of canned meat and fish. I bought some canned anchovies even though they were not on the list because I use them regularly and it was an especially good price, which indicates not shortage. However the Spam was mostly sold out and I scored the last three cans because I am a bastard. Plenty of Armour Treet on the shelves, so the ninnies must not really be hungry.
  • Very low on pasta and rice but not sold out. I bought some because I am running low, but only my normal small amount.
Conclusion: Looks like panic is subsiding for now, but it could flare up again.

Meanwhile: Today all restaurants in Illinois must close by gubernatorial executive order, but take out is still OK.

My first reaction was if it's that sort of emergency how could take out be OK? Then I realized, without waiters in the mix that's approximately half as many resentful drudges spitting in your food.

So they are going for risk reduction rather than zero tolerance, which is completely reasonable. :)
