:bigthumb: I nominate that for "word-of-the-day".

Is that a portmanteau of FASCistCESTus—faceTIOUS?

Which might be defined as an authoritarian and constraining form of flippancy. Not to be confused with the less nuanced and ordinary facetiousness or sarcasm.

Prince Harry will snub traditional Royal Family Boxing Day shoot to avoid upsetting animal lover Meghan
Daily Fail

Apparently there's a royal tradition of shooting peasants on the day after Christmas.

This is a tradition that goes all the way back to King Richard II. :coolspecs:

Severn bridges: Final day of at least 800 years of tolls

Sunday marked the final day of a centuries-old tax of paying to cross between south Wales and south-west England before the toll is removed.

Charges on the M4 and M48 Severn bridges will be axed on Monday - saving commuters as much as £1,400 a year.

People have had to pay to cross the Severn Estuary, with its treacherous tides, since Roman times, be it in a car, in a train or on a ferry.

The first written reference to the ferry is in a 12th Century document.

"Monday will be a very historic day," said historian Anne Rainsbury.

"It'll be the first time you can cross the Severn Estuary for free."

The charge for vehicles has been scrapped after the bridges returned to public ownership last year.

UK Puts On Hold Plans To Suspend 'Golden Visa', Sparks Controversy

The Tier 1 Investor Visa, used by many high net-worth Indians over the years, was to be suspended from midnight last Friday over fears of its misuse.

In a U-turn, the UK government on Wednesday put on hold plans to suspend "golden visa" category in reference to its use by super-rich foreign nationals, including Indians, to acquire fast-track settlement rights in Britain.

The Tier 1 Investor Visa, used by many high net-worth Indians over the years, was to be suspended from midnight last Friday over fears of its misuse.

The UK Home Office had said last week that the route would be suspended until new rules are put in place next year, under which independent, regulated auditors will assess such high net worth applicants' financial and business interests and check they have had control of the funds for at least two years.

However, the Home Office said that the plans are on hold, without an explanation behind the decision.

Tower of London Beefeaters switch tunics for yellow vests

Image

London (AFP) - Beefeater guards at the Tower of London switched their traditional red uniforms for yellow vests on Friday as they went on strike with staff at other historic sites over pensions.

For the first time in 55 years, visitors to the mediaeval castle were met by a picket line.

Staff at the Historic Royal Palaces, including Hampton Court Palace and Kensington Palace, staged a walkout, donning the high-visibility yellow vests worn by demonstrators in France.

HRP has replaced their current pension system with a new one which includes increased employee contributions.

"Young employees will lose money with this new scheme," Theresa, an HRP employee approaching retirement, told AFP.

Meanwhile the upcoming no-deal Brexit ferries are in good hands:
'No deal' Brexit ferry contractors copy conditions from 'takeaway' website

Details on the firm's website included a reference to customers placing a "meal/order", with fewer than 90 days until Brexit.
