What about the adjective form? Meaning "pertaining to Reno"?

It could just be "Reno" or the same as the demonym ("Riennese"), but it doesn't have to be.

I suggest "Renal". :notsure:

Something way too French for a civilized man to bother about.

Saving Reno's Neon

Image

After decades in the dark, Reno's iconic neon signs are glowing again…with the help of one tireless supporter.

The story begins soon after World War II, when the kinetic energy of neon signs exploded across the U.S. landscape...but not for long, and Reno came late to the party. As Neon sign collector Will Durham told me, "Neon was big all over the United States until the late 50's and early 60's when newer technology came around, but Nevada didn't get that memo. It was like the news was lost on Nevada, and we started building giant signs and more elaborate signs."

They were flat-out beautiful signs. Bright, colorful, creative and every one unique…Individual works of art. Durham says “They helped us attract tourists, but it also really defined our image, and it was something that was welcoming and optimistic. And it was something that Reno really embraced."

For decades, Will has been scouring the state, adopting these old works of colorful art. He has about a hundred classic neon signs now, but has his favorites, like the huge blue buffalo head above a title. Will says, "The Buffalo Bar in Sparks was one of the most iconic signs in my views, and it was a figurative sign."

A couple of the signs made their way to The Knowledge Center inside the UNR campus library, where on one lit-up sign you can see the streamlined horns and the bright red and white that would lure weary travelers to the old Longhorn Motel in Reno. Now Will is on a mission to make neon the official 'element.' As he told me, “We figured this is a way to include neon as one of our state symbols."

The sign in the picture is from the Mapes' Hotel, torn down in the 1990s after a long bitter fight to preserve it.

I know in Vegas, they have a museum for a lot of the city's famed signs. It's really cool and I would suggest checking it out if one can. Reno though...so much of it is gone already. The old Reno Arch for instance is now a sign over a park somewhere in Oregon.

These ladies, whom I remember from my childhood as being THE sign I was in Reno are long destroyed

THis dude used to be a major local landmark, he nearly got demolished but instead is in a museum

Lots of neat old signage that is going, going, gone

Luckily though, somewhere in the last couple of decades, Reno stopped trying to be the Dollar-store version of Vegas. Probably the smartest move the city ever made

Not merely neon signs.

Historically Riennese neon signs that show the world how it's done. :coolspecs:

I dunno. The picture he picked isn't really the main drag. Downtown Reno went through a long phase of trying to be the Dollar Store version of Vegas, so downtown is still pretty gaudy and always has been.

But it has its "charming" spots too, like along the river.

Just don't go down to the river bank, because THAT'S where all the homeless people hang out.

Not Reno, but nearby:
Bizarre Chase Through High Security Nevada Nuclear Test Site Ends In Deadly Shooting

Image

Long known as the Nevada Test Site and now called the Nevada National Security Site, the sprawling land mass deep in the southern Nevada desert is home to some of America's most sensitive installations and pockmarked with craters from past nuclear explosions. It's here that a peculiar and deadly incident occurred on January 28th, 2019.

At 5:18pm local time, a man drove through the security checkpoint at Mercury, which is located roughly 70 miles north of Las Vegas. The austere enclave off U.S. Route 95 has long acted the basecamp for the Test Site's operations. A car chase ensued, with the notoriously territorial private contractors that guard the massive installation and Nye County Sheriff deputies pursuing the rogue vehicle.

The chase went on for roughly eight miles before the car pulled over. A man got out of his car with some type of metallic cylindrical object in his hand and confronted his pursuers. He would not respond to verbal commands and was shot dead by both security personnel and law enforcement officers as a result.

Nah, the test site is closer to Vegas than Reno. For reference, Vegas is six hours away for me. San Francisco is only four

I always like the "fun" fact that Reno is West of Los Angeles.

Nevada senators want classified briefing on secret plutonium

RENO, Nev. (AP) — Nevada’s U.S. senators are asking Energy Secretary Rick Perry for a classified briefing on the secret shipment of weapons-grade plutonium to a nuclear security site north of Las Vegas.

Democrats Catherine Cortez Masto and Jacky Rosen expressed their “continued outrage” over the Trump administration’s handling of the radioactive material in a letter to Perry Friday.

The department revealed this week that it trucked 1,000 pounds (453 kilograms) of plutonium from South Carolina to Nevada sometime before November when Nevada sued to block the shipments.

The department insists appropriate notice was provided in August when it approved plans to temporarily store plutonium in Nevada to meet a court-ordered deadline to remove it from South Carolina by 2020.

The senators say department officials lied to a federal judge about the status of the shipments during a Jan. 17 hearing in Reno.

Lots, that's why we have a big ol' geothermal plant between Reno and Carson.

The hot springs in Carson are nice too.

I just looked it up. Reno to Carson City is 31 miles.

Is there anything between the two besides the geothermal plant?
I mean such that it could be considered an extended metro area as it might be Baltimore to DC?

Or just desert with an occasional cow skull? :BigGrin3:
