Artificial Ecosystems

Post by ed » Thu Jan 17, 2019 11:21 am

Thinking about terraforming my lake pond puddle by the addition of some new critters. I dropped hundreds of goldfish in it, I suspect they were et by other denizens.

Latest idee .... crawfish. Cute little bugger. Snap at the grandkids if they get too close.

Figure I could get a couple of hundred, acclimate them then give them their freedom ... for what that is worth. Also figure they'll have a better chance than some faggy goldfish.

Wife insists that I not introduce any gators, she's afraid they'll go after the grandkids. I figure survival of the fittest but evidentially got outvoted.

So crawfish it is.

Thoughts?

Also ... come spring I am going to introduce some carnivorous plants. Had always been a dream of mine to breed them large enough to eat a child small mammal. I had this notion that if I put some growth hormone on them I could get an interesting effect.

I put some on a Hens and chickens succulent and got the plant to accelerate its life cycle. They shoot a stalk up like a century plant (agave americana?). Then die. Sorta cool but creepy.

What about iguanas? Had one once. Fucker bit me.

You mean crawdads?

Pretty sure they are already native to the area, so no "invasive species" woes.

Another plus: Anytime you feel like a little snack, you can just go out to the pond and grab one.

In Lake Ed, dinner grabs you.

Do you know what lives in there already?

I don't really know much about ponds myself, but the Internet does:

You probably need to make sure it's suitable for the fish too.

If you've got the crawdads, up your stake with Gambusia Minnows.

Then there's built-in food for Channel Catfish!

Assuming you like the taste. Fried catfish is one of my favorites so long as I don't have it too often.

Real gods introduce invasive species and command them to evolve.

Real gods invent invasive species and command them to heal themselves under penalty of eternal damnation.
