The Knowledge to be Treasured Thread

Post by Anaxagoras » Tue Jan 22, 2019 11:23 am

With apologies to a certain Humble, Yet MagNIfIcent poster. A thread without any particular idea except that it should be about knowledge to be treasured for its own sake. Not useful knowledge or practical knowledge necessarily, but knowledge that is its own reward.

Well, here's my first humble attempt at a contribution. I'm not a big follower of hockey but I really enjoyed this podcast episode about hockey. I don't want to say too much about it so as not to spoil anything but I thought it was quite good.

If you cut a face lengthwise, urinate on it, and trample on it with straw sandals, it is said that the skin will come off. This was heard by the priest Gyōjaku when he was in Kyōto. It is information to be treasured.

Something way too French to bother about.

It does well but for the 16-18 stone values. If you graph it out you'll see that you end up with a 'jerker' at the low end and a 'separator' at the high. It is otherwise useful.

One stone is approximately 6.5 kilograms.

But when you're arranging something as consequential as a hanging, "approximately" won't cut it.
You've got to be spot on the exact hundredweight, quarter, and pound.

What better illustration of the folly (and Frenchness) of the metric system?
