Possibly moving from the land I love.

Post by Nyarlathotep » Thu Feb 07, 2019 1:16 am

So, I left my old job in February of last year (or more accurately, it left me). Been selling insurance since November, but that isn't really working out. I am not cut out for that, I think.

But I am scheduled for a second (and final) interview tomorrow for a programming job in a city near Anaheim, California. I have always said it would take a lot to get me to move away from here, but they are offering me a lot more money than I have ever made in my life. Even taking into account the higher expenses of the area, I will be doing pretty well if I get this job.

Scary though. I am rather like a medieval peasant in that I have never lived more than 60 miles from where I was born and I rarely travel. I am not sure if I want people to wish me well or not.

Good luck!

I think of that whole area as "Los Angeles" but I guess it's actually a lot of different cities.

But yeah, unfortunately sometimes what you do for a living dictates where you should live. At least it's not too far away, is it?

I just hope public transportation in the area is decent. Because, from what I have seen of the area, it’s going to dial my driving phobia up to 11. I can deal with driving if traffic is light or the area is familiar. It will be neither.

Let your deciding factor be your budget: If you really can realize an increased income after you've paid for the increased cost of living, then and only then, balance that against the kind of lifestyle you want vs. what will be available living in 'the big city'.
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

The thing I love about doing interviews on Skype is that they are the only job interviews where I get to dress like so: Dress shirt, tie, ratty old sweats, beat up fuzzy slippers.

Oh yeah, we crunched the numbers. If I get this we will be much better off than we even were when I was working my old job.

That's cool. Yeah they have a whole compound there. It used to be all Toyota before Toyota moved to Texas.

It's nice area, and there are many great places near by to hang out. Irvine, which is not too far off, has a large collection of tech and gaming companies and many fantastic Asian (primarily Korean and Vietnamese) restaurants.

Believe it or not, the air quality in Reno and Carson sucks just as bad, maybe worse.

In the summer, we tend to get the smoke from wildfires, even ones in California. In the winter, we tend to get “temperature inversions” that traps all the smoke from wood stoves, cat exhaust, etc on the valley floor.

Smog might be an improvement, especially in the summer
