And now, a musical interlude, featuring the song stylings of Lee Marvin

I always liked that character, because I would probably have had a very similar attitude if I lived during the California Gold Rush.

There were a whole mess of Broadway musicals set in The Old West at one point.

That movie was late in that game.

That one had the advantage of being made into a movie though, which is the only reason I (and a lot of other people) ever discovered it.

It's an old joke but it's true in my case. I was literally channel surfing one day (remeber doing that?) and saw Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood in Old West Garb and watched, then was kind of weirded out when they broke into song...but kept watching.

Might've been different if either one of them could carry a tune in a bucket, but we can't have everything. :)

Frankly, I think their inability to sing added a bit of veracity to the movie. No one expects a cranky old prospector to be able to sing

Which is why that movie had it all over the original Broadway version (before my time, but I heard the original Broadway cast album). 8)

I'd have gone with "The Mummy" over "The Phantom of the Opera", but I guess they didn't want to double up on Karloff.

To be fair to Mr. Marvin, he didn't really try to sing. He talked his lyrics. :)

We had that happen 'round here a few years ago.
First video clip.

... The stars were suns, but so far away they were just little points of light ... The scale of the universe suddenly opened up to me. It was a kind of religious experience. There was a magnificence to it, a grandeur, a scale which has never left me. Never ever left me.
