ATF coming to visit moi.

Seems that my FFL (which I never used) is up for renewel. ATF is supposed to visit every FFL every so often. Ergo ...
Thing is I think I want a differnet lisence (destructive devices for reasons of business development). Dunno.

Need a bit of parsing guidance.

"destructive devices for reasons of business development"

OK. I know more or less what "destructive devices" are as an ATF legal category.

Does that mean that for the purposes of developing your business, you want a license that covers "destructive devices "?

Or is there a distinct legal subcategory of ""destructive devices for reasons of business development" with its own license? :BigGrin3:

Hey ed!

It's been more than 32 seconds. Did they kick down your door yet?

Not that ed has any intention of being destructive in the ordinary every day sense.

It is merely once you have eliminated the various other types of licenses, what remains are "destructive devices".

Now that Civil War reenactment has become problematic, WWI reenactment could be the next big thing.

That's it, isn't it, ed?

I think I want to manufacture destructive devices (40mm grenade launchers, specifically) for export. Thing is I think I want to sell my company and having a foot (toe?) hold offshore with a military arm is attractive. Got a design, got the manufacturing, got the contacts.

And ATF, at least here, is amazingly helpful.

Agent left. I think I have a road map.

But here is a problem.

In the US a "gun" is the receiver part. Not the guts, not the barrel, just the receiver.

Now, during manufacturing, at some unknown point, a piece of metal transubstantiates and becomes a gun.

At that moment the receiver must be serialized and entered into a formal book.

Now the thing needs to be finished, anodized or parkerized or some metal finishing.

Now it needs to be engraved with the manufactures name.

If all these events are carried on under one roof there is not problem. One license. If not, at each step the entity doing the work must be licensed with the appropriate manufacturing license, that is $3k each.

We are small and are profitable because we have virtually zero fixed costs. We sub out EVERYTHING. And there is the problem.

It seems we might get a variance. We shall see.

Our agent is a lovely woman who we have dealt with before. Gotta decide where we are going with this mess.

You're their kind of guy, big on having papers in order and such.

What about authentic reproduction gas shells for the reenactment of the Battle of Passchendaele?

You in on that? :cowbell:

Actually we are developing a civilian white smoke round. That would work.

If there is a bursting charge in a shell like that it might need to be licensed.

You can't just put a wooden stock on it and call it a "sporting rifle", and let your end users in Togo or wherever turn it into a "destructive device"? :p

When you're selling to savages, you have to come down to their level.

That's not caving. That's just business.

Right, ed? :P
