Long way to go to die.
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

At least on Mars you wouldn't have to worry about it bursting into flames when it gets wet, like ... you know. :)

I waited a while before commenting.

Have any of you ever owned a Chrysler pickup? You're lucky if it lasts 100,000 miles. And during that 100k, expect to replace your transmission twice along with your driver-side door. Every panel will rust out. They're made of tinfoil. The fucking frame will rust out too.

Yea, if the price were right, I might buy the cybertruck. It won't rust out. Dead simple drive train. The body is the frame. The carrying specs are decent.

Or a Toyota Tundra. Or a Tacoma on the cheap.

There are older attempts at lasting cars. The problems with robust enough stainless steel and quality manufacturing were, of course, weight and price.

But there are other ones:
  • technology: you can't just upgrade like software;
  • fashion: the latest stuff is proof you have changed something in your life.
So perhaps, just perhaps, Musk's truck is somehow ugly enough to be timeless? (I don't believe it, in fact.)

In the U.S. a driver's side mirror is still required but the change requires one signature from the NHTSA. I presume the interior rearview camera display is actually three cameras mounted left, right and rear.

Yea, I'm guessing it ain't for everybody ...
If Raphael Zammit is being perfectly honest, his first reaction when someone texted him a photo of Tesla’s new Cybertruck was horror. “I was like, ‘Oh my goodness! What did Tesla do?’” he says. “What did they do?”

Zammit isn’t just a neutral observer. He heads the MFA Transportation Design program at the College for Creative Studies in Detroit and has been involved in automotive design for a quarter century. And to him, the Cybertruck is “extreme.”

“It literally breaks every rule we tell to our students,” Zammit says. “It’s what we tell them not to do.” No, this is not a truck built for truck designers.

I will say one thing for the design: I don't know how practical it is, but it's got a kind of "iconic" quality to it.

I do question in what sense it's really a "truck"? It doesn't appear to be very functional as a pickup truck for carrying cargo. Is there a hidden cargo space in the back?

About like a Chevy El Camino.

Here's a 1959 model.

The El Camino is a Polish Cathedral to the Cybertuck's typical suburban warehouse.
