Things you regret not doing

Post by ed »

Real things that you opted not to do. Not things that you had no chance of doing.

I got 3.

1- knew a guy who was a director of Today. Neighbor. He offered to let me sit in during a show "behind the scenes". Never did it too look azy to get up to get into the city

2- friend was the chief engineer for the rehab of grand central. He offered to take me on a tour of the bowels of the tunnels. Too lazy

3- dad of a woman who worked for me was captain of a nuke sub. She told me that he took vips out for a spin and i could go if i wanted. Never took him up on it. Not sure why to this day. Real regret.

A contrario I went into some relationships knowing very well they'd end badly, but also knowing the regret of skipping the opportunity would have been worse. :|

Missed one of those about 30 years ago in Boston. Still think about her from time to time and hope to christ she had a rewarding life, if even without yours truly as part of it.

I never told her how I felt. What a fucking idiot I am.

I regret not completing my college degree.
I regret not learning martial arts.

Probably have more "people"/"relationship" regrets than "things."

But here are a couple.

One of my best friends in law school worked as a military liaison to the White House and offered to give me and my then wife a private tour. Was going to do it, but then 9/11 happened. Later, when things calmed down, it just seemed like too much of a hassle to go all the way up there for it.

Same law school buddy who was in one of the JAG branches at the time offered to help push an application through his branch when I was bitching about the public defender's job. I don't know why I never took him up on it, it was something I really wanted to do while in law school. I'm sure I would have enjoyed it much more than my PD job.

He says the same thing about his current gig in the foreign service. But that, I think, is just him being nice. I doubt I'd have much of a shot. And things have worked out well enough for me career wise. Although, I still think about it sometimes. Of course, even if I were to get it, it has the distinct disadvantage of requiring actual work. They don't give out those sweet, sweet federal pensions for free, you know. Not to mention, they'd probably do a background check on all my internet posts badmouthing federal and state govenment. Ha. Ha.

You offered a situational choice. (What would you do differently, not who)

Live with it.

I keep responding to this thread and deleting the post over and over.

That's all I'll say about that.

Comes a time one gets used to the idea that doing X precludes doing Y. And vice versa.

I regret giving time to people whom I knew would fuck everything up after giving them the benefit of the doubt.

In 2006, I contemplated selling my house. That would have been a fantastic move at the time, to switch to apartment living for a while. It was the peak of my home's value before the market crash. I probably could have cleared 20 grand at least.

Then if I really wanted to still live in a house, just a year or so later I could have bought one at a tremendous bargain.

Now I WANT to move but I'm still just barely upside-down. Should be able to in a couple of years.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

I regret not getting a prefrontal lobotomy when they were still the fashion.

That I never learned to play a musical instrument, knowing full well that I did not then and do not now have the patience for such.
... The stars were suns, but so far away they were just little points of light ... The scale of the universe suddenly opened up to me. It was a kind of religious experience. There was a magnificence to it, a grandeur, a scale which has never left me. Never ever left me.
