Microsoft Picks a Side in 'Great Spacing Debate'

Word will flag double space as an error

In a move that some traditionalists might consider a sign we are living in the End Times, leaving two spaces after a period is now going to be flagged as an error in Microsoft Word. When typewrites were still widely used, it was normal to leave two spaces after a period because "monospaced" characters used up the same amount of space and the larger space made it easier to spot where a sentence ended, the Smithsonian explains. Most fonts are now proportionally spaced, but the debate between one-spacers and two-spacers has still raged for many years. The change is being gradually rolled out and two-spacers may find their choice being marked as an error after their software updates, reports CNN.

For whatever reason, in our business niche, patent attorneys (we're not patent attorneys but most of our clients are) still operate by old-fashioned conventions and two spaces after a period is standard in the patent writing business. Honestly, it doesn't matter. It's not like the patent office will reject a patent application for violating this ancient convention, but that's still how most of our customers expect it to be. Another one is ALL CAPS in the figures. Probably from the olden days when they would be written by hand, because of bad handwriting. No longer needed, but still followed for some reason.

All uppercase is all caps.

In all contexts uppercase == capitals.

Your example is not all caps, it is initial capitals.

If you use HTML, it closes up excess spaces unless you jump through all manner of hoops to make it stop.

I remember a time you had to type, count, then type again while inserting the requisite spaces – if you wanted justification.

Centering a title --

1) Center the page.
2) Spell the title out loud including spaces, hitting the backspace key for every two characters.
3) Type the title.
4) Back up to where you started typing and type underscores to underline the title.

BTW, to be able to do underlining is why underscore is a character. It does not originate as a variant "space" or "dash". :oldman:

Also, computers are the reason '1' and 'l' are separate keys. Likewise 'O' and '0'.
An exclamation point is single quote - backspace - period.

Those last two were not true of very expensive typewriters, but people who didn't work in law offices and the like never saw those.

That's not true. In 1973 the Texas National Guard used IBM Selectric typewriters that could almost perfectly reproduce an out-of-box installation of Microsoft Word 2004.

On a serious note, I doubt anyone under the age of 40 would have a clue what you're talking about. I think I took my first and only typing class around 1974. Memory sez it was an Remington manual. Like this:

But newer. I didn't learn to touch-type in that class but I do remember the rule: 2 spaces after the period. I finally learned to touch-type after having bought my first computator in '82 with a bootleg copy of some typing tutorial program (not Mavis Beacon).

Has anyone here ever run across that one guy on the internet that doesn't put any spaces at the end of a sentence?I run into him on occasion.I want to tell him but I feel he must know.Right?

My great nephew, aged about eight, wanted a mechanical typewriter for his Christmas present last year - and his dad got him one from Ebay.

We had great fun with it on Christmas day - I showed him how to set up the tab stops, how to thread the ribbon, and how to type a 1 when there is no '1' on the keyboard. I forget the make, but it had a two-colour red/black ribbon and a lever that shifted the ribbon up and down so you could type in black, red, or half-and-half with the lever in the centre - that was the position my great nephew preferred.

I think the plan is to get him a mechanical adding machine for his birthday.
