The Book of the It needs its own thread.

Post by Abdul Alhazred »

Because I don't want to derail AC's accident thread any further.

viewtopic.php?p=1028228#p1028228

First of all, who else here has read it besides me and Witness?

Question for Witness: What language did you read it in?

If I ever start a religion, reading it will be a rite of passage for 13 year olds, as preparation for adulthood. :)

I'd have to look in my library to answer your various questions.

So cut the shit. Why the fuck should I care?
... The stars were suns, but so far away they were just little points of light ... The scale of the universe suddenly opened up to me. It was a kind of religious experience. There was a magnificence to it, a grandeur, a scale which has never left me. Never ever left me.

Indeed. Stop being a coy piece of shit and just tell us what you think is important in this tome of which you speak.

Otherwise, shut the fuck up.

Dipshit. :)

I googled it out of curiosity:
https://www.amazon.com/Book-Georg-Grodd ... 1614277761
Georg Groddeck was a physician and writer regarded as a pioneer of psychosomatic medicine. Groddeck is often mistaken for an orthodox disciple of Sigmund Freud; indeed, he was perhaps the only analyst whose views had some effect on Freud. Freud mentions Groddeck in "The Ego and the Id," crediting him with giving a name to what Freud had already given a local habitation, to wit, the Id. The "Book of the It" is an unusual work in which each chapter is in the form of a letter to a girlfriend addressed as "my dear". Groddeck attempts to unlock Eros, the instinctual drive chained by conventions of society, and to show it to be the unknown life-force that animates man from womb to grave. It is, according to Groddeck, the basic sexual motivation that influences every aspect of individual personality. In understanding the "It", man frees himself to understand the inexplicable desires and the hidden impulses that guide his life. Contains a new introduction by Ashley Montagu.
And here's an excerpt:

http://ww3.haverford.edu/psychology/dda ... ddeck.html
* LETTER I *

So, my dear, you want me to write to you, and it is to be personal or gossipy. I am not to make fine phrases serious, instructive, and, as far as possible, scientific. That's tiresome! For what has my humble self to do with science? The small amount one needs as a practicing physician I cannot well display to you, or you would see the holes in the gown with which, as qualified physicians, we are officially endowed. Perhaps, however, I shall meet your wishes if I tell you why I became a doctor, and how I was led to reject the claims of science.

It's important because it's even more Freudian that Freud, but written in a comprehensible style without a lot of jargon.

Also it's a scream. :lmao:

Sounds horrid. The kind of thing they give you to read in solitary as you while away the decades incarcerated in Château d'If.

Tell me, does it come with hat pins to stick into your eyes?

It's especially good to read It soon after rejecting Freud for other reasons.

A reductio ad absurdum though the intention was to popularize Freudianism.

Groddeck was the one of the last of the old pre-Freudian alienists, and a super enthusiastic convert to the new faith.
Apostle Paul to Freud's Jesus, but it didn't play out that way.

Witness?

Who cares about Freud? Why would any person read that crap in the first place? Don't get it.

It didn't last all that long as these things go, but it was a major world religion. :coolspecs:
