Swell. Wonder what they'll forget in the space station.

They are being used as props.

We made it into space, but ours is not the civilization that will make it to the stars.

I really doubt that any civilisation will make it to the stars.
Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

I got to Alpha Centurai in Civilisation II many times, so I think you're talking out of your substantial rectum.

Ever play Civilization II in the mode where there are no spaceships, and you have to whip all others all to win it?

I did, and here's the fun part -- If you keep on playing the simulation for a while after the "winner" sequence, the whole map erupts with partisans.

Science Fiction. Certainly for now.

In any case, would a probe really count as a civilisation reaching the stars?

The fastest spacecraft ever produced maxed out at 343,180 km/h; 213,242 mph. Proxima Centauri, the closest star is 40,208,000,000,000 km away. By my maths, it'd take 13,374 years to arrive. Know any tech that'd fire up after that long in deep space?

↑ As you said, science fiction (for now).

But that's not the point I quoted.

You're getting into philosophy with that, Witness. Would a sufficiently advanced AI count as part of a civilisation?

If we go by the Turing test, "indistinguishable from a human", the answer is evidently yes.
Soon we'll have to decide if they are property or persons (before becoming our overlords)…

Niven's corollary: Any technology distinguishable from magic is insufficiently advanced.

Maybe. A true AI is science fiction for now, too.

Nah. Too much micro management for that.

In civ6, your typical late era barbarian uprising involves TANKS.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Well, I suppose (hypothetically of course) that if we created the AI it is like an extension of ourselves.

Human beings are ill-equipped for interstellar travel. I think it would have to be a probe of some sort.

The only way humans might be able to make the journey too is as frozen sperm and eggs. Maybe pre-fertilized eggs which are then frozen.

How do you keep them preserved for ten thousand years though? :notsure:

Maybe instead of sending actual biological materials like frozen eggs, the AI just memorizes the DNA sequences and fabricates the material after arrival?
