Out of the loop
So I've ascertained that Corplinx was banned and Abdul deleted his account, and that's led to some technical hoopaju, but I haven't figured out the story behind it. Was that a deleted thread too? Can someone hook me up with a link or a short summary?

Copelinx wasnt banned, he did one if those narcissistic posturing in public exits and required all his posts deleted.

Wow. No wonder the forum is broke. It's like having the rug yanked out from under you, more like the foundation yanked from under your house.
Shit, man. That's....what.....20 years of posts? Just gone? That somehow seems more damaging than burning down your house. Except it's more like burning down you apartment complex. What was the final straw? I don't even remember Abdul getting pissy all that much.

Interesting zero hypothesis.

Seems to me it is very difficult (<— irony) to get banned from here, apart from doing something illegal or very stupid… or dying.
On a more serious note, with these two gone and a sizable fraction only showing up episodically, how will the forum fare? How do our old-timers see it: have there been such "skinny" phases before?

Haven't you been watching the news? Skepticism is dying. We are the last of the old guard. The world is being taken over by flat earthers, anti-vaxxers, and Trump supporters. Bigfoot hunters and Ancient Aliens are the biggest hit shows on the History channel, for fuck sake. They'll be using our bones to ward off evil spirits when we're gone, Mr. Witness. Abdul and corplinx both requested deletion. Abdul had upwards of 89,000 posts. I forget how many corplinx had. After deletion, Captain banned both of them for getting rabbit in their blood. Just a formality in keeping with the august nature of this citadel of intellectual discourse.

They were not comfortable with the current state of society where having the wrong opinion can violently change their lives. They decided that the safest course of action was to remove evidence of them having any opinion and went on with their lives.

FWIW which is probably about $0.02 USD, I considered it none of my business why they wanted their user accounts and posts deleted and I didn't ask.

"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

If Grammatron's speculation is accurate, I may think their fears are exaggerated but it's hardly a panicked step. For the effort of making a single request, they've reduced the chances of being bit in the ass by something they wrote here from n%, whatever n turns out to be, to about 0%. "n" doesn't have to be very high for it to be worth it.

Re: Out of the loop
I agree with this, but I also think it's a shame. The forum style seems much better to me than the ephemeral style of Facebook, Twitter, and other platforms. I suppose there's the faint possibility that BB forums may see a resurgence - if and when people tire of the intrusion of their privacy on those other platforms - but I'm not holding my breath.
In any case, I don't like the more heavily populated platforms such as Reddit, and even some busy BB forums - it's like trying to drink from a waterfall.
We could use some new blood though: once the number of posters falls below a certain threshold, a forum is in danger of dying, and I think we're now precariously close to that threshold.

Searching on the Web you get various groups enjoying monthly meetings in pubs (similar to the Philosophy Cafés) but nothing in my region (and there's Covid right now). When they publish something online it's alas definitely on the dreary side. Fora are rare, couldn't find anything worthwhile in French for example.
Not surprised that sites like Twitter have crushed the traditional forum, but being old school it feels to me like preferring fast food to a decent dish. Oh, well…

Re: Out of the loop
There's bindeweede's skeps forum in the UK. It has about five active members. Orphia Nay, once a regular here, gave up running her Australian skeptics board due to constant bickering, and so it goes. The movement needs a charismatic figurehead to replace James Randi, (the million dollar challenge was a great publicity stunt), but there just isn't anyone who can cut it. Penn Jillette's OK but he's no James Randi.
