'Screams of agony': Anthony Robbins devotees burnt in fire walk
At least 21 people have been treated for burns after attendees of an event by motivational speaker Anthony Robbins tried to walk on hot coals, fire officials in California say.

The San Jose Mercury News reports that at least three people went to a hospital and most suffered second- or third-degree burns.

Robbins was hosting a four-day gathering called 'Unleash the Power Within' at the San Jose Convention Centre.

Witnesses said a crowd went to a park where 12 lanes of hot coals were laid out on the grass.

Robbins' website promotes 'The Fire walk Experience,' in which people walk on super-heated coals.

Witness Jonathan Correll says he heard "screams of agony".
Did they get their money's worth?

Fucking vulture. I hope they sue the fuck out of him.

There will be lawsuits, but I can't help but wonder how it will turn out.

What will be his defense? "I didn't force them to do it."

He'd have a point. I'm sure he 'incited' them to do it. That can probably be proved.

I'm kind of of the opinion that they got literally what they were previously getting figuratively: burned.

Stupid gullible fucks.

I'm aware that this is often done without injury.

What went wrong? Was it set up incorrectly for such a demonstration?

Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"

Possibly revealing a magic trick secret here, but in the interest of public safety, tough shit.
Spoiler:
Usually they have to walk across a wet carpet before they step on the coals. The "trick" is to make sure one's feet are wet; the heat evaporates the water and creates a protective layer of air. My guess is that the carpet--or in this case, the grass--wasn't kept wet enough, or wasn't wet at all.
Moral of this story: don't let anyone talk you into walking across hot coals.
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

The stupid, it burns.
Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

Actually standing around barefoot on cold wet ground is the real secret. Once your feet are cold, as well as wet, you can walk on coals (covered with a layer of ash) just fine. But if something disturb the coals, so you are hitting the red hot part with no ash, and your feet are warm and dry, you will get burnt. I know this from experience.

Yep. I used to do a thing where if I was around people both drinking and smoking. I'd hold an ice cold drink in my hand and keep turning it whenever I felt like my fingers were warming up the can/glass/whatever, then I could grab a lit cigarette and hold it on the lit end for a couple of seconds without burning myself.

Same principle, just with feet.

Plus, usually, firewalks are very brief--one or two steps at the most. Nothing that would call for "lanes".

How stupid does it get? I can't put a limit on it, but almost three years ago three people died and seventeen others were hospitalized in a "sweat lodge" in Arizona. James Arthur Ray was paid almost $10,000 per person to dehydrate people in a "vision quest" for 36 hours, give them a buffet, and stuff them into "sweat lodge" made of plastic sheets.

The real stupid was people were still paying for his events after all this had happened.

Because it is funny. Remember the difference between comedy and tragedy according to Mel Brooks. Tragedy is when I get a splinter in my toe. Comedy is when you get eaten by a tiger.
