France most skeptical country about vaccine safety

The French had less confidence in the safety of vaccines than the residents of 66 other countries recently surveyed by researchers.

A team lead by anthropologist Heidi Larson of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine conducted what it contends is “the largest survey on confidence in immunization to date,” interviewing more than 65,000 people. As the researchers report online in EBioMedicine today, 41% of respondents in France disagreed with the assertion that vaccines are safe. On average, just 12% of respondents in other nations disagreed with this statement.

“I didn’t expect France to be as negative as it was,” says Larson, who runs The Vaccine Confidence Project, a nonprofit that monitors public concerns about immunization. At the other end of the scale, only 0.2% of the respondents in Bangladesh had similar safety misgivings.

Larson notes that France recently has experienced “anxiety” about suspected but unproven links between the hepatitis B vaccine and multiple sclerosis and, separately, the human papillomavirus vaccine and side effects like fatigue in girls. France similarly had strong reservations about a flu vaccine quickly made to combat the pandemic of H1N1 in 2009. “There was a furor that the government bought so much of that vaccine and a worry that it was made too quickly and couldn’t be safe,” Larson says.

Nurses and midwives who ignore scientific evidence by promoting anti-vaccination to patients and the public are being cracked down on in a tough new position statement from their industry regulator.

The Nursing and Midwifery Board of Australia released the vaccination standards in response to what it described as a small number of nurses and midwives promoting anti-vaccination via social media.

http://www.cbsnews.com/news/measles-out ... ns-dozens/
An outbreak of measles in Minnesota has sickened more than 30 children in recent weeks, primarily in the state's large Somali-American community, where many parents avoid the measles-mumps-rubella vaccine because of unfounded fears that it causes autism.

"This has nothing to do with being Somali, it has everything to do with being unvaccinated," Kris Ehresmann, infectious disease director of the Minnesota Department of Health, told CBS Minnesota last week as the number of cases grew.

Somalis are just the latest example of a tight-knit community in which the highly contagious disease has gained a foothold in the U.S. in recent years.

"With Somalis, we know that it's a community that's been targeted for misinformation from the anti-vaccine community and so that's a bit distressing," she said.

Michigan mother jailed for refusing to vaccinate her son

Rebecca Bredow would not let her nine-year-old be immunised after initially agreeing with the father to do so.

Her ex-husband has now been awarded temporary primary custody in order to get the boy the jab People who do not speak Proper English use such words.

Michigan parents are legally allowed to skip or delay their children's vaccinations due to personal beliefs.

But Bredow fell foul of the law because she reneged on agreements with her former spouse dating back to November 2016 to have the boy immunised.
The mother-of-two was sentenced on Wednesday for contempt of court after flouting a court order last week to have her son vaccinated. So, unfortunately, this is more legal consequence than a legal recognition that her refusal represents harm to the child.

She and her ex-husband decided at the time of their child's birth that they would space out See, this is what not having guns but having women as leaders gets you. See: Asthmatic and his Fag-o-Cycle. We need to send them some Freedom and delay jabs for their son.

The couple separated in 2008, according to ABC News, but they shared parental custody and the father still wanted the boy vaccinated.

Really, Dr. Important, you don't believe people can try homeopathy for rectal beaver infestation if they believe it works?
No. Even Faux's coverage had a lawyer who not only explained how she legally fucked up, she did not try the "though she has a right to determine what previously eradicated diseases other children will die from" apologetics. The medical expert simply damned her and, Heavens to Betsy, even the Talking Head agreed and suggest she should lose any custody.

In a medical first, a 38-year-old man with gallstones developed severe liver damage and jaundice after following the delusional advice of a practitioner of naturopathy, a pseudoscientific system that eschews evidence-based medicine.

Writing in BMJ Case Reports, doctors report that the naturopath told the man to take an excessive amount of Epsom salt for "stone dissolution." Such overdoses of the salt, aka magnesium sulfate, can cause diarrhea, breathing problems, kidney injury, and cardiac arrhythmias. But this is the first time doctors have ever reported that it caused liver damage.

Essentia fires about 50 workers over refusal to get flu shots
Essentia Health has fired roughly 50 employees who refused to get flu vaccinations under a new policy that pits personal choice against public health interests.

Hundreds of workers got their shots last week after being warned that they would otherwise lose their jobs, the Duluth-based health system said Tuesday.

But a fraction of workers still refused and did not meet Essentia’s medical or religious criteria for exemptions, according to Dr. Rajesh Prabhu, an infectious disease specialist and Essentia’s chief patient safety officer.
Religious criteria? Of course, if you believe in the right Sky-Daddy you are exempt.

Labor unions are also unhappy:
Three unions objected to Essentia’s policy, which was imposed to reduce the spread of influenza in the health system’s 15 hospitals and 75 clinics in northern Minnesota and three other states.

The United Steelworkers, which represents some of the workers, unsuccessfully sought a federal court injunction to block the company from firing workers who refused vaccine.

The Minnesota Nurses Association (MNA) and the American Federation of State County and Municipal Employees, Council 65, also lodged complaints about the practice with the National Labor Relations Board. The nursing union announced Monday that it would file grievances on behalf of any nurse who lost a job over the flu shot policy.

“We tried to sit down with management, but Essentia executives told us they intend to follow through with terminations and mandatory flu shots regardless,” said Steve Strand, co-chair of the MNA’s bargaining unit in Duluth.

As many as 400 doctors, nurses or other workers hadn’t been vaccinated as of Nov. 15, when Essentia reported 97 percent compliance among its 15,000 employees. But many of those holdouts got shots or filed exemptions before the company’s Nov. 20 deadline.

Prabhu said 99 percent of Essentia’s workers have now complied — though the company is still reviewing some exemption requests.

Italy recorded 5,006 measles cases last year, over 25% of the European total.
The country's immunisation rate is 87%, significantly lower than the recommended 95% threshold.
Northern League and Five Star Movement have vowed to scrap a vaccination law ahead of the March election.

Doctors 'flabbergasted' that half of parents think flu shot causes the flu: 'It's impossible'
“I’m flabbergasted,” William Schaffner, MD, an infectious disease specialist and professor at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, tells Yahoo Lifestyle. “I and many others have been saying for over 20 years that you can’t get the flu from the flu vaccine. I don’t know how to say it any louder. You cannot get the flu from the flu vaccine. That’s a myth.”
But it's not a suprise to me that beliefs like this tend to be immune to pronouncements from experts.

Hell, skeptics have been debunking various woo beliefs for longer than that, but the beliefs still persist.

It may be impossible for the flu vaccine to give you the disease, but flu vaccines can provoke an immune reaction. In fact that's what they're supposed to do. An the immune reaction can cause symptoms similar to a flu, although milder. Or you might catch a cold or a different strain of the flu, or even the flu itself before the protection kicks in.

Embarrassed CDC Announces It Accidentally Switched Flu Shots With HIV
Image

ATLANTA—Informing the more than 150 million Americans affected by the error that the mistake was “totally our bad,” embarrassed officials from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention announced Thursday that they had accidentally switched all 2018 flu shots with samples of HIV. “Oh, god, we really and truly screwed the pooch on this one. We wish to say we’re deeply sorry, especially to the 59.1 percent of children in the U.S. who received what they had every right to expect were influenza vaccines this fall. Not that it’s anywhere near adequate consolation, but we’re offering a full refund as a partial apology for infecting you with HIV,” said CDC director Robert Redfield, who explained that the two kinds of vials are stocked “really close to each other, and look practically identical.” “We promise to be way more careful in the future. On the plus side, your HIV is only in the acute infection stage, so many of you have a decent amount of time before you develop full-blown acquired immune deficiency syndrome. Yes, obviously, the ideal scenario is to have no life-threatening spectrum of infections destroying your white blood cells, especially—and this is extra embarrassing—during flu season, like it is right now. Man, we were so adamant about you getting these shots in the first place, too.” Redfield encouraged Americans to schedule another flu shot just as soon as the CDC followed up on reports that in the rush to correct the error, some replacement batches had been mistakenly swapped out for anthrax.

God Answers Prayers Of Paralyzed Little Boy

'No,' Says God

Image
SAN FRANCISCO–For as long as he can remember, 7-year-old Timmy Yu has had one precious dream: From the bottom of his heart, he has hoped against hope that God would someday hear his prayer to walk again. Though many thought Timmy's heavenly plea would never be answered, his dream finally came true Monday, when the Lord personally responded to the wheelchair-bound boy's prayer with a resounding no.

"I knew that if I just prayed hard enough, God would hear me," said the joyful Timmy, surrounded by stuffed animals sent by well-wishing Christians from around the globe, as he sat in the wheelchair to which he will be confined for the rest of his life. "And now my prayer has been answered. I haven't been this happy since before the accident, when I could walk and play with the other children like a normal boy."

There's No 'My Kid Has Cancer' In Team

Image

All right, team! Look alive! This is the big one. This is the week we finally pull into the sales lead, and that means total focus.

Now, as you no doubt know, the free trip to Vegas for the year's highest-selling office is within our reach. If we can keep the momentum of the past week going, we can pass the Denver office and take this thing. But that means we must all work together as a team. Every one of you is a cog in a well-oiled sales machine.

And I don't want to hear any excuses. That means no more 45-minute lunches. No more lingering around the break room. And, most of all, no more of this "But my daughter is going in for chemotherapy tomorrow" business. From anybody. I'm not going to name any names, but I've heard that one a couple of times this week, and that's a couple times too many. I hope I only have to say this once: There is no "My kid has cancer" in "Team."

I know, I know. Cancer sucks. Hey, I'm not happy your kid has it, either. But the way I look at it, cancer's not a reason to get slacking, it's a reason to get cracking! You think your kid's chemo is gonna be free? You gonna say to the doctor, "Hey, I decided not to go to work this week because I'm too upset about my kid's cancer, so how about you give me that chemo for free?" See how far that'll get you! (It certainly won't get you to Vegas!) As we say in the business, no COM-mission, no RE-mission.

I've seen too many salespeople take a nosedive in this business because they let their terminally ill kid hold them back. They start visiting the kid in the hospital, their cold calls drop off, and their sales numbers suffer. Next thing you know, it's not just the kid who's dying, but the hopes of an entire sales team that wants to win a Vegas trip!

You hear what I'm saying? You're part of a team, here. If you miss a pitch, you might miss a sale, and if you miss a sale, we all might miss winning that trip! Believe you me, we've all got plenty of problems we could use as excuses to miss work, but we don't want to let our team down! Do you see Jerry staying home because of his trial separation? Or Brian because of his car trouble?

What do we sing "The Team Song" at the start of every day for? You think it's just so we can hear Glen howling off-key? (Ha, ha, I'm just pulling your leg there, Glen.) What it comes down to is, we're Teamers, not Tumors!

And, while I'm on the subject, what about that trip a certain someone took to Disneyworld recently? You think the rest of us wouldn't love to spend five days whirling around on teacups? You can go to Disneyworld next year, two years from now, ten years from now! I realize the Make-A-Wish Foundation paid for the trip, but that's not reason enough. Hell, I've got tons of frequent-flyer miles piled up, but you don't see me taking off for Bora Bora smack-dab in the middle of our final sales drive, do you?

Did you even try to give the sales pitch to your kid's doctors? The nurses? The Make-A-Wish guys? See, that's what I'm talking about. You're letting opportunities slip through your fingers, and that hurts the team! We'd be the leaders for that Vegas trip if not for your lollygagging and lack of focus. Team has four letters. T-E-A-M. Here's an easy way to remember it: Take Every Avenue Manageable. Do you see the letters "T-H-E D-O-C-T-O-R-S S-A-Y T-H-E C-A-N-C-E-R H-A-S S-P-R-E-A-D T-O H-E-R B-R-A-I-N" somewhere in there? I don't.

This job is about one thing: moving vacuum cleaners. Everything else is a blind alley, kiddo.

Yeah, that's what I was wondering. Someone might get offended by the other ones, but they don't have to do with vaccines. But if idiots believe this one is true, or that something like this is even possible, it could potentially have a negative public health consequence. It is funny though.

I noticed they took down or you cannot find the Japanese original "African-American Neighborhood Terrorized By Ask Murderer."

I think I posted the one where "As a Mother" the person gets right to decide which previously eradicated childhood diseases roar back. Anyone still citing The Onion as real news deserves the derision they get.

Then we have The Pros and Cons of Vaccinating Children:

Pros
  • Helps out pharmaceutical industry
Get to puncture child with needle
Old family syringe shop depends on it
Habituates children to the pain of existence
Flies in face of science by discrediting single unanimously refuted paper from 10 years ago
Healthier children equals friendlier waiters at Chili’s down the line
Could save a few million children’s lives
Cons
  • You have to go to a place
Chance of developing autism 100 percent
Puts the onus of character-building entirely on sports
Without suffering through diphtheria, the flu, and measles, American children will become effete, pampered do-nothings
Free lollipops promote unhealthy eating habits
Child won’t get to be kindergarten’s Typhoid Mary
Bullies parents into slavishly following actions recommended by decades of physicians’ peer-reviewed research that establishes an irrefutable scientific consensus

Because of Anti-Vaxxers, 37 People in Europe Have Died of Measles This Year
An outbreak of measles is rampaging across Europe, taking a huge toll. In the first six months of 2018, there were 41,000 recorded cases of the easily preventable viral infection.

Yup. It went from something that was a paragraph in a text book on the clinical practice to endemic.
