Re: Chess
Sometimes it is a draw because the higher ranked player is bored. Magnus will often offer a draw when he's a bit behind. The lesser-ranked player will agree because a draw against him is a win for them. It's fucking disappointing.
OTOH, the [early] Leela Zero games against Stockfish were fucking awesome.

His is a reasonable position and I don't blame him. The tournament is to be held in November of 2020. Carlsen is Norwegian and as such, knows well what Norway in November is like.Anaxagoras wrote: ↑Wed Jun 26, 2019 1:05 pm Chess world news:

at the very least, I think the reigning champ should have some say. 'Cause if he don't play,...
Fuck that, he's going to Florida.

Interesting game with an early queen sacrifice
It's all very far beyond anything I could even contemplate doing on purpose. But fun to watch.

Hmmm, I'm drawing a blank there.
You could give them less time I suppose. Perhaps a bonus for winning games? So that both players win more if there are fewer draws?

You'd think grandmasters would play on better boards. I suppose those are for the novice.

Igors Rausis says he 'lost my mind'
(Newser) – One could be forgiven for never having heard of Igors Rausis—probably until the 58-year-old chess grandmaster got himself busted cheating in a tournament with his smartphone in a toilet stall. As the Guardian reports, the International Chess Federation says it caught the Latvian-Czech player "red-handed using his phone during a game" on Friday, and has since suspended him. The ICF says that Rausis was long suspected to be a cheat—his ranking has miraculously shot up in recent years—and that the bust is "merely the first shot" in its fight against cheating.
I'm expecting agadmator to comment on it.

Re: Chess
I've been watching this Fischer random chess thing on agadmator's channel.
I think I might even like this more than regular chess.
It's Carlson vs Caruana. Wesley So and Ian Nepo are also involved. Top rate players all around.
I actually found the move at 8:20. Kinda surprised myself. I usually pause the video and try to find a good move when he promps it, but I'm pretty hit-or-miss at that. But I found this one.

Change of pace. It makes for interesting openings. Openings you wouldn't normally see in a game between grandmasters.

The final match is underway, Carlson vs So, and agadmator has videos of the first 4 matches already up. They are all quite interesting!

Why? It's not like you're the one playing.
It's just like watching football. You don't have to be good at playing football to watch.

Want to take a minute to remember Shelby Lyman. I watched this guy for the whole match. He would get excited "Oh Boy, what a move!!!" etc etc.
I was sad to see that he died recently. Actually my bro and I did. God, must have played 100 games during that match. I lost all of them as I recall.

RIP Shelby.Shelbourne Richard Lyman (October 22, 1936 – August 11, 2019) was an American chess player and teacher known for hosting a live broadcast of the 1972 World Chess Championship for the PBS television station Channel 13 in Albany, New York, New York. This broadcast became the highest-rated public television program ever at that time, far surpassing viewership expectations. He was also taught sociology at the City College of New York for three and a half years.[1] Shortly after the 1972 World Championship ended, he began writing a syndicated column about chess for Newsday; at its peak, this column was published in 82 newspapers around the world.[2] He later hosted a two-hour broadcast covering the World Chess Championship 1986. This segment was recorded at WNYE-TV in Brooklyn and aired on 120 public television stations.[3]

Re: Chess
Probably in retrospect Nakamura's decision to castle queen side when he did, given the position was a big strategic blunder.

Re: Chess
Hikaru Nakamura is a Youtuber now and he's pretty good at it too.
He's also on Twitch, but that's for the kids.
One of the best, maybe even the best at rapid formats like blitz. That's 3 minute time limit. It's chess at lightning speed, but he is able to explain what he's doing. I can't follow his explanation because my brain doesn't work at that speed, but it's still interesting to watch.

That was fucking impressive. I suppose Sergey figured it would be an easy win and played a well known opening fools-gambit only to gave it shoved up his ass.

Bizarre. A chess podcast with Agadmator and Hikaru was taken down, apparently by an algorithm, for reasons unknown.
It has been restored apparently, but it's still a mystery.
