Cutlasses

Post by ed »

So Saturday I went to a very large antique arms show in Lakeland FL. Bought a few things, an odd luger for one. But I also bought this

WTF is it? You may ask. Well, it is a US Navy Boarding Cutlass of 1914. Lookee here

It replaced the Boarding Cutlass of 1861 shown here side by side (click for larger images)

Blade is about 25". And I am here to tell you that is is the one non-firearm weapon I'd bring to a knife fight.
Interesting factoid is that these things were supposedly found on US Navy ship right up to WW2.

A Boarding Cutlass, how cool.

Probably banned in the UK.

Isn't that for pirates? :)
If we do it it is not really "boarding", it is more like "visiting"

Be nice to have a period grapnel with a few fathoms of hemp rope to go with it.

Not sure what the wink is for but a fathom 6 feet or the distance between out stretched hands. A quick way to measure cordage. Short and tall guys have a conversion table tattoo.

OK second time is a charm.

What does this mean?

Just showing ed there's interest in his topics.

I think he's feeling rejected.

And real men use traditional measures like fathoms rather than faggy meters and such. hence

Compare "Full fathom five" to 16 meters <----does not even rate quote marks.

Thank you, it is appreciated though if you could attend without saying that it's charity it would be a tad more effective. You could say "my, that's pointy" or "is it sharp?" or that looks like a real man's weapon". Stuff like that that shows a real deep interest.
