From sacred to secular: Canada set to lose 9,000 churches, warns national heritage group

Shrinking congregations and rising maintenance costs force old churches to be closed, sold or repurposed

A national charity that works to save old buildings estimates that 9,000 religious spaces in Canada will be lost in the next decade, roughly a third of all faith-owned buildings in the country.

National Trust for Canada regeneration project leader Robert Pajot says every community in the country is going to see old church buildings shuttered, sold off or demolished.

"Neighbourhoods are going to have multiple churches closing," Pajot said. "Some people qualify this as a crisis, and I kind of agree. It is going to hit everybody."

It's not just beautiful, historic buildings that will be lost, but also the sense of community provided by worship spaces. Churches have not just been for Sunday, but for Girl Guides and political meetings, weddings and funerals, piano lessons and programs for the homeless.

"It's not just about the buildings. It really is beyond the impact of the loss of a heritage building in the community. The places of faith really have been, for generations, centres of so much of community life. They play a de facto community hub role, community service role," Pajot said.

OK it's no big revelation that certain religious practices (or maybe all of them) are "pagan" in origin.

What makes this video notable is how Jehovah's Witnesses make a big deal about not being pagan like those other guys.

Formalization, Mechanization and Automation of Gödel's Proof of God's Existence

Christoph Benzmüller, Bruno Woltzenlogel Paleo
(Submitted on 21 Aug 2013 (v1), last revised 3 Sep 2017 (this version, v5))

Gödel's ontological proof has been analysed for the first-time with an unprecedent degree of detail and formality with the help of higher-order theorem provers. The following has been done (and in this order): A detailed natural deduction proof. A formalization of the axioms, definitions and theorems in the TPTP THF syntax. Automatic verification of the consistency of the axioms and definitions with Nitpick. Automatic demonstration of the theorems with the provers LEO-II and Satallax. A step-by-step formalization using the Coq proof assistant. A formalization using the Isabelle proof assistant, where the theorems (and some additional lemmata) have been automated with Sledgehammer and Metis.

Eastern Kentucky man sues Hampton Inn, accuses boss of trying to force exorcism on him (CBS)
HAZARD, Ky. (WKYT) - An eastern Kentucky man has filed a lawsuit against Hampton Inn and his boss after he says he was punished for not undergoing an exorcism.

The lawsuit was filed in Perry Circuit Court in March, and the plaintiff is Jason Fields of Leslie County. The defendants are Hampton Inn, Employee Resource Group and Sharon Lindon.

Fields states in the lawsuit he started working at Hampton Inn as a front desk employee beginning in 2016. Sharon Lindon, his manager, learned Fields was going through a divorce and believed his marital problems were because he had demons.

Lindon is accused of telling Fields he had to get cleansed in order to keep working at the hotel. Lindon gave Fields a questionnaire with many questions about religion and intimate activities. Fields said in the Lawsuit he was asked to return it to Lindon before undergoing an exorcism.

Fields accuses Lindon of punishing him for not participating in the questionnaire and exorcism by changing his shift and bringing in people from her ministry to pray for him while he was working. This would happen in front of the guests. This would lead Fields to quit his job.

The lawsuit accuses Lindon of religiously discriminating against Fields because he didn't share her beliefs. Fields is seeking punitive and compensatory damages in the lawsuit.

Well, it's Kentucky after all. Second only to ol' Miss and the Bayou for inbreeding and new, spectacular heights of Teh Dumbth.

Take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It's the only way to be sure.

We'll try to arrange it so the wind won't bring the fallout over your neck of the woods ed. But no guarantees. You might want to be ready to skeedaddle on a moments notice.
