Guam Catholic Church to file bankruptcy amid abuse lawsuits

HAGATNA, Guam (AP) — Guam’s Catholic Church will file for bankruptcy — a move that will allow the archdiocese to avoid trial in dozens of lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by priests and move toward settlements.

Archbishop Michael Byrnes announced Wednesday that mediation efforts that began in September led the church to bankruptcy.

“This path will bring the greatest measure of justice to the greatest number of victims,” Byrnes said. “That’s the heart of what we’re doing.”

Byrnes said the bankruptcy will provide “finality for victim survivors that they’ve been heard and understood.”

Attorney Leander James, who is working with alleged victims in Guam, said in a statement the move will help resolve current lawsuits from more than 180 claims of abuse through settlements.
[…]
Earlier this year the Vatican removed the suspended Guam archbishop from office and ordered him not to return to the Pacific island after convicting him of some charges in a Vatican sex abuse trial.

The Vatican didn’t say what exactly Archbishop Anthony Apuron had been convicted of, and the sentence was far lighter than those given high-profile elderly prelates found guilty of molesting minors.

Apuron, who has denied the allegations and has not been criminally charged, is 73. The Vatican retirement age is 75.

Pope Francis named a temporary administrator for Guam in 2016 after Apuron was accused by former altar boys of sexually abusing them when he was a priest. Dozens of cases involving other priests on the island have since come to light, and the archdiocese is facing more than $115 million in lawsuits alleging child sexual abuse by priests.

Merrillville Priest Made Up August Attack; Now Being Investigated For Child Sex Abuse
CHICAGO (CBS) — A Merrillville priest has been placed on administrative leave, after police confirmed he lied about being beaten at his church in August. The priest also faces a “credible accusation of sexual misconduct with a minor.”

Fr. Basil Hutsko, 64, said he was attacked at St. Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Merrillville, Indiana, while praying at the altar on Aug. 20, and claimed his attacker mentioned the clergy sex abuse scandal.

On Tuesday, the Ruthenian Eparchy of Parma, Ohio, which oversees Hutsko’s church, said it verified with Hutsko’s family that the attack “did not occur.” Merrillville police also confirmed Hutsko made up the attack. Police had been investigating a possible hate crime, but now are questioning Hutsko.

It was not clear if Hutsko would face any charges for filing a false police report, but the Ruthenian Eparchy said he has been placed on administrative leave “in response to a credible accusation of sexual misconduct with a minor.”

The eparchy said the attack allegedly happened in 1983.

While on leave, Hutsko will not be allowed to serve in any capacity as a priest.

Before working at St. Michael in Merrillville, Hutsko previously has served at St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Cleveland; St. Barbara Byzantine Catholic Church in Dayton, Ohio; St. Basil Byzantine Catholic Church in Sterling Heights, Michigan; and St. Mary Byzantine Catholic Church in Marblehead, Ohio.

Priest Badly Bruised After Hate Crime Beating In Indiana (from August)
CHICAGO (CBS) — A local priest is badly bruised after he was beaten until he passed out Monday. The priest says the attack was not random, but that he was targeted by someone filled with hate.

The attack on Father Basil John Hutsko happened at the Saint Michael Byzantine Catholic Church in Merrillville, Indiana.
The FBI is involved in the case, helping local police look for the attacker. Neighbors say they saw a black car outside the church on Monday.

“Mostly the bruising on his forehead, the whole front of his head went into the floor,” said Chief Joseph Petruch of the Merrillville Police Department, as well as a friend and fellow priest. “Grabbed him by the neck, threw him down on the floor and immediately started slamming his head against the floor. Both sides, front and back.”

Father Basil Hutsko face is battered and bruised and his body is in pain.

The incident happened Monday around 9 a.m. when Hutsko was praying at the altar at the church.

At this point, Father Hutsko is not talking publicly, but did talk to CBS 2, as well as police.

“The subject yelled out ‘This is for all the little kids.’ I have enough there to say it’s a hate crime,” said Petruch.

Father Hutsko was attacked the same day Pope Francis issued a letter to Catholics around the world condemning priestly sexual abuse and cover ups. A grand jury report called out 300 predator priests who allegedly molested more than 1,000 children in six Pennsylvania dioceses.

“Do you think that this person was targeted because of his past?” CBS 2’s Audrina Bigos questioned.

“We’re unsure of that. We’re looking into his past,” Petruch responded.

A fellow priest at the church says Father Hutsko has not been found guilty of any sexual abuse charges, but investigators are looking into his background.

Perhaps an investigation into a made up crime led to uncovering a real crime. If so, all's well that ends well.

Years after 'date-rape drug' conviction, Peoria diocese priest is again removed from ministry
Chicago Tribune
When the pastor of Ottawa’s Catholic parishes announced in March that his assistant, the Rev. Jeffrey Windy, was being removed from ministry, the abrupt and mysterious departure came as a shock to people who had grown to like the young priest over the last nine months.

To others, the brief notice of the removal in the local newspaper brought a different kind of shock — that Windy had been serving as a priest at all.

He was, after all, an ex-con who had been arrested while assigned to a different parish in 2002 and served time in federal prison for manufacturing and selling gamma-hydroxybutyrate, more commonly known as GHB, or the date-rape drug.

Despite Windy’s criminal past, the bishop in Peoria had decided in 2013 to return Windy to parish work, first in Bloomington and then in Ottawa, just a few minutes from Windy’s hometown of Peru { Illinois } . Now he was being removed from ministry again — and the church wasn’t saying why.

French priest remanded over claims of decades of abuse

A French priest from the southern city of Nice has been remanded in custody and placed under formal investigation on suspicion of sexually abusing minors over 35 years – in a rare move by the prosecutor’s office.

The Nice prosecutor said Jean-Marc Schoepff, 61, would remain in provisional detention to ensure no pressure – either direct or indirect – could be put on any victims who had yet to come forward.

Schoepff served as chaplain at several private high schools in the southern city, including the prestigious Stanislas Institution, for more than 35 years. A judicial inquiry was opened in May by the prosecutor’s office for “sexual abuse of minors by a person in a position of authority”.

There are around 10 accusations against the priest, according to the prosecutor’s office, with at least one of them falling outside of the statute of limitations.

Pope removes two cardinals hit by sex scandals from group of close advisers

VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Francis has removed from his group of close advisers two cardinals hit by sexual abuse scandals, including his economy minister, Australian George Pell, the Vatican said on Wednesday.

Pell has taken an indefinite leave of absence from his job as head of the Secretariat for the Economy, one of the most powerful posts in the Vatican, to defend himself from prosecution for historical child sexual offences in Australia.
[…]
The other member removed from the so called C-9 - a group of nine cardinals that meets periodically with the pope in Rome - is Francisco Javier Errázuriz of Chile.

Errázuriz, 85, the former archbishop of Santiago, has been accused by abuse survivors in Chile of discrediting victims and not investigating their cases, which he denies.

Chile’s sexual abuse scandal prompted all of the country’s 34 bishops to offer their resignation to the pope who has so far accepted seven.

No rape, but part of the death spiral:
Male Escort Exposes 36 Gay Priests in File Sent to Vatican Containing Explicit WhatsApp Chats and Erotic Photos

A 1,200-page dossier containing the names of 34 "actively gay" priests and six seminarians in Italy has been sent to the Vatican by the archdiocese of Naples.

The allegations were compiled by Francesco Mangiacapra, a gay male escort who told local media he couldn’t put up with the priests’ "hypocrisy" any longer.

"The aim is not to hurt the people mentioned, but to help them understand that their double life, however seemingly convenient, is not useful to them or to all the people for whom they should be a guide and an example to follow," Mangiacapra said, as reported by the Corriere della Sera.

Catholic Church in Illinois Withheld Names of at Least 500 Priests Accused of Abuse, Attorney General Says

The Catholic Church in Illinois withheld the names of at least 500 priests accused of sexual abuse of minors, the state’s attorney general said Wednesday in a scathing report that accused the church of failing victims by neglecting to investigate their allegations.

The preliminary report by Attorney General Lisa Madigan concludes that the Catholic dioceses in Illinois are incapable of investigating themselves and “will not resolve the clergy sexual abuse crisis on their own.”

The report said that 690 priests were accused of abuse, and only 185 names were made public by the dioceses as having been found credibly accused of abuse.

“The number of allegations above what was already public is shocking,” said Ms. Madigan in an interview.

The Illinois report is only the latest effort by state prosecutors to hold the Catholic Church accountable by scrutinizing the church’s own records. At least 16 state attorneys general have initiated investigations of varying scope since August, after a devastating grand jury report in Pennsylvania accused more than 300 priests of sexual abuse over 50 years, and accused bishops of covering up.

Pope Francis tells clerics who abuse minors to hand themselves in

Rome (CNN) Pope Francis has told those who abuse minors to hand themselves in to civil justice authorities and "prepare for divine justice," in his strongest words to date on the sex abuse crisis roiling the Roman Catholic Church.
In his annual speech to the Vatican's Curia on Friday morning, the Pope also thanked the media for exposing the sex abuse crisis and encouraged survivors to speak out.
"I myself would like to give heartfelt thanks to those media professionals who were honest and objective and sought to unmask these predators and to make their victims' voices heard," the Pope said.

"The Church asks that people not be silent... since the greater scandal in this matter is that of cloaking the truth," he said.

"To those who abuse minors I would say this -- convert and hand yourself over to human justice and prepare for divine justice."

"Pope Francis tells clerics who abuse minors to hand themselves in..."

An unfortunate choice in words.

Probably just a bad translation.

Only tangentially related (and slightly misleading title):
Fake Catholic priest unmasked in Spain after 18 years

Miguel Angel Ibarra carried out weddings and baptisms, first in Colombia and then in southern Spain, despite having never been ordained.

Those ceremonies will still be recognised, the Church says, but not his communions or the confessions he heard.

He was found to be an impostor after a complaint was filed in Colombia.

The complainant alleged Mr Ibarra had forged his documents.

After a "thorough investigation", it was found that he had never been ordained and he has now been ordered to return to Colombia, Church officials say.

Mr Ibarra moved to Spain last October, settling in the town of Medina-Sidonia, which is home to more than 11,000 people.

Homosexuality is to blame for sexual abuse, not Catholic church, claims German cardinal
The Telegraph (OK)
A German cardinal on Friday provoked anger and controversy when he claimed the Catholic church was not responsible for sexual abuse by its clerics, and instead sought to pin the blame on homosexuality.

“What has happened in the church is no different from what is happening in society as a whole,” Cardinal Walter Brandmüller said. “The real scandal is that the Catholic church hasn’t distinguished itself from the rest of society.”

...
Of course the "homosexuals" in question were all Roman Catholic priests and the whole hierarchy covered for them.

The only thing new is people talking openly about it.

A little hot Protestant action.

Myia Maples broke down in tears as she told PIX11 News about the alleged sex abuse and rape of her 14-year-old sister, allegedly by her own father, Matthew Gibson, the son of the bishop of the Progressive Baptist Church of Brownsville.

Maybe the underlying problem isn't celibacy after all.

Bad times for the Pope.

Boring meetings:
Pope Francis Wants Bishops to Learn to Punish Abusers at the Vatican's Sex Abuse Prevention Summit

(VATICAN CITY) — Pope Francis is insisting that bishops attending his high-stakes sex abuse prevention summit will learn the laws to use against predators, how to care for victims and will make sure that no cleric abuse cases are covered up again.

The Vatican on Wednesday provided details about the Feb. 21-24 meeting, saying its main aim is to guarantee that bishops around the world “clearly understand what they need to do to prevent and combat the worldwide problem of the sexual abuse of minors.”

Francis will attend the full summit, which includes plenary meetings, working groups, witness testimony, a penitential service and a final Mass on Feb. 24.

And new, wealthy, competition on the home turf:
Move over, Vatican -- there's a new church in town!

Rome (CNN)Italy's first ever Mormon temple opened on Monday, just a few miles up the road from the Vatican, in the Eternal City of Rome.
While the building's spires don't reach the heights of St. Peter's 450-foot-high dome, the Pope's new neighbors hope their temple will also become a place of pilgrimage for spiritual seekers.
Elder Ronald Rasband, one of 12 men known as Apostles who govern the Mormon Church, says the choice of Rome is based on its history as the center of Christianity.

"The early apostles served and lived and were martyred here in Rome," he told CNN, "so this is the place that our prophet (President Russell M. Nelson) felt the temple in Italy should be."
Rasband says Mormon leaders discussed their plans with the Vatican and that the two churches often work together on social issues.

$3.8 billion paid in lawsuits and claims over sex abuse allegations in Catholic Church since 1980s, group says

(CNN) – Since the 1980s, the Catholic Church in the United States and its insurance companies have paid out more than $3.8 billion in lawsuits and claims involving allegations of clerical sexual abuse, according to a monitoring group.
BishopAccountability, a non-profit that tracks allegations of abuse in the Catholic Church, says the payouts involved cases filed by more than 8,600 survivors who were allegedly sexually abused by an undisclosed number of clergy since the 1950s.
Spokesman Terry McKiernan told CNN the number of associated clergy is difficult to calculate because some settlement announcements omit the number of predator priests.
The monies have not gone solely to survivors, McKiernan said. Attorneys get a cut, too. And not all the money comes out of the coffers of the Catholic Church, because the church maintains insurance policies that cover a portion of the settlement payments.

Life Site News (Roman Catholic oriented political site)
January 20, 2019 (LifeSiteNews) – Pope Francis promoted one of his protegés within the Vatican, Argentine bishop Gustavo Oscar Zanchetta, despite the Vatican having received evidence prior to the bishop's promotion of sexual misconduct, which included accusations of "sexual harassment" of adult seminarians, taking "nude selfies," and exhibiting “obscene” behavior.

Found this. Not about rape, but about cash (from 2013):
Vatican freezes funds of senior cleric after smuggling probe

The Vatican announced Friday that it has frozen the funds of a senior cleric who is at the centre of a suspected money smuggling operation.

Monsignor Nunzio Scarano was arrested last month, accused of planning to bring 20 million euros from Switzerland to Italy for wealthy friends. Scarano has close links to the Vatican bank and was arrested following a complex investigation involving wiretaps which revealed plots to smuggle cash past customs. He was arrested along with an Italian secret service agent and a financial broker.

Scarano was a former senior accountant in the Holy See’s financial administration, he is currently being held in Rome’s Queen of Heaven jail where he is also embroiled in another investigation linked with his accounts at the Vatican bank.

The Vatican bank has not been directly implicated in the case but it is already dealing with its own investigation into suspected money laundering, the bank denies the accusations.

Scarano came to the authorities’ attention back in January when he called police to his apartment to report a burglary. Police were stunned upon entering the apartment, which was lined with expensive art and divided by Roman-style columns. The stolen goods were estimated to be worth 6 million euros and included works by Giorgio de Chirico and Renato Guttuso.
And, of course:
It is the latest in a series of scandals to rock the Catholic Church, which have been particularly uncomfortable for the new Pope whose message has always been the Church’s duty to the poor. Recently it was revealed recently that Pope Francis is forming a committee to investigate the findings of an external audit into the Vatican’s budget. He told the Council of Cardinals that he was thinking of creating a “study-group” to look into issues of transparency and accountability.
