Hundreds of accused abusers named by Catholic leaders in Texas

The move by Texas church leaders follows a shocking Pennsylvania report in August detailing seven decades of child sexual abuse by more than 300 predator priests.

DALLAS — Catholic leaders in Texas on Thursday identified 286 priests and others accused of sexually abusing children, a number that represents one of the largest collections of names to be released since an explosive grand jury report last year in Pennsylvania.

Fourteen dioceses in Texas named those credibly accused of abuse. The only diocese not to provide names, Fort Worth, did so more than a decade ago and then provided an updated accounting in October.

There are only a handful of states where every diocese has released names and most of them have only one or two Catholic districts.

Sexual abuse of nuns by priests denounced by Vatican women's magazine

THE Vatican's women's magazine has denounced the sexual abuse of nuns by priests, and the resulting "scandal" of religious sisters having abortions or giving birth to children who are then not recognised by their fathers.

The February issue of Women Church World, a monthly magazine distributed alongside Vatican newspaper L'Osservatore Romano, was published on Friday. It cited Pope Francis's own analysis of abuse by saying clerical power was at the root of the problem.

It said nuns have been silenced for years by fear of retaliation against them or their orders if they report the priests who abused them.

The publication marks a significant public acknowledgment from inside the Vatican of a problem the Holy See has long known about but has done next to nothing to address.

In the interest of ecumenism:

Hundreds of Southern Baptist leaders, volunteers accused of sexual misconduct in bombshell investigation

Is anyone shocked that it isn't just Catholics?
Hundreds of leaders and volunteers within Southern Baptist churches across the nation have been accused of sexual misconduct against young churchgoers for decades - many of them quietly returning to church roles even after being convicted for sex crimes.

A bombshell investigation by the Houston Chronicle and the San Antonio Express-News found that over the last 20 years, about 380 Southern Baptist church leaders and volunteers have faced credible accusations of sexual misconduct. Of those, roughly 220 were convicted of sex crimes or received plea deals, in cases involving more than 700 victims in all, the report found. Many accusers were young men and women, who allegedly experienced everything from exposure to pornography to rape and impregnation at the hands of church members.

The newspapers reported that the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) largely treated the accusations as isolated issues, and took on an "out of sight, out of mind" mentality, even amid growing pressures to create a registry so the accusations wouldn't disappear as alleged perpetrators moved from city to city. The Chronicle and Express-News created a database of convicted sexual abusers with documented connections to the SBC.

The investigation took over six months and involved the cross-examination of hundreds of allegations corroborated by court documents and prison records. The results were startling and reiterated how allegations of sexual misconduct aren't limited to just the Catholic church.

Many accusers said their experiences of sexual assault at the hands of church officials they trusted changed their lives forever. Debbie Vasquez said she was 14 years old when her pastor at a rural Southern Baptist church in Texas first molested her. She said the married pastor continued to assault her for years, including impregnating her when she was 18.

Years later, in 2006, she sued the pastor, Dale "Dickie" Amyx, and the church. Amyx reportedly admitted in a deposition he had sex with her when she was a teenager and was the father of her child, but claimed their sex was consensual. He was not charged with a crime. As of 2016, he is still listed as the pastor of that church.

Attempts to reach the Texas church for comment were unsuccessful.

Our churches sometimes have ad campaigns (posters on public transportation) for that. It warms my heart knowing they aren't doing so well. :)

Similar story closer to (my) home.

Much of $100 million from sale of Holy Name lot to go to church sex-abuse debts
Chicago Sun Times
Anticipating getting $100 million or more from the sale of a parking lot at Holy Name Cathedral, the Archdiocese of Chicago expects to spend most of that windfall repaying money that was borrowed to cover the financial costs of clergy sex abuse claims.

That’s according to a Chicago Sun-Times examination of the church’s most recent financial reports and interviews that show the archdiocese owes more than $200 million, mostly related to sex abuse claims. And the church estimates it could end up with another $100 million in costs for pending and future claims.

...
Note that this parking lot would have prohibitively high real estate taxes to remain a mere parking lot were it not for the church tax exemption.

Basically they were just sitting on it waiting for the right price, until the forced sale.

Vatican envoy to France under investigation for sexual assault

Paris (CNN) – The Vatican's envoy to France, Archbishop Luigi Ventura, is under investigation for sexual assault, a French judicial source told CNN Friday.
The Paris prosecutor's office opened an investigation on January 24, the source said.
Ventura, 74, has been based in Paris since 2009, serving as a diplomat for Pope Francis, as reported by Agence France-Presse (AFP).

The archbishop is alleged to have inappropriately touched a junior male official working at the Paris city hall, Paris deputy mayor Patrick Klugman told CNN Friday.
He added that following the alleged sexual assault, the city hall filed a complaint with the Paris prosecutor.
The Vatican said in a statement that the Holy See was aware of the investigation and that it "awaits the results." While the Vatican's embassy in Paris said it would not comment on the investigation.
