College admissions bribery scandal

Yeah well whatever.

https://www.latimes.com/local/lanow/la- ... story.html
Federal prosecutors on Tuesday indicted dozens of people — including actresses Felicity Huffman and Lori Loughlin — in connection with an elaborate scheme aimed at getting students into elite colleges.

Below is a charging document in the investigation:
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

Meh. They'll buy their way out of it.

The College Admissions Scam Shows How Parents Duped Their Kids, Too

Often the kids themselves would be none the wiser. They'd go take a test, hand it in, and then someone on the inside would either correct it or substitute a different test from with correct answers.

There are weird points in all that:
1. Usually (here at least) you get your corrected test back, to learn from it, and to check that you have been fairly evaluated and without errors. So how could they hide the tampering from the students themselves?
2. Getting a weak student into a demanding school is a recipe for disaster, can't see that work apart from getting some kind of fake diploma at the end.

What am I missing? :?

I don't think the first point is actually an issue with the ACT or SAT. I took mine decades ago but I don't remember anything like that. You got your results back but not the test itself. If memory serves.

The second point is what the article is about. However you could make the same argument about affirmative action. And the same parents could hire tutors or something if their kids struggle in college.

The Most Bizarre Details From the College Cheating Scandal

So it wasn't just cheating on the SAT or ACT tests, it went beyond that. In some cases they went for athletic scholarships, for non-athletes (curious). This involved either photoshop or in one case at least setting up a fake water polo scene.

Then there's this:
After all that, Loughlin’s daughter apparently doesn’t even care about school in the first place.

Loughlin and her husband, Mossimo Giannulli, allegedly “agreed to pay bribes totaling $500,000 in exchange for having their two daughters designated as recruits to the USC crew team,” though neither of their two daughters participated in crew. It seems to have been sort of a waste of money, though, since one daughter, Olivia Gianulli, a beauty vlogger who goes by Olivia Jade, was criticized this summer for saying in a video that she doesn’t know “how much of school I’m gonna attend,” as Yahoo! reports.

She explained in a video that the first week of school she would be in Fiji for a shoot, and doing all this traveling for work, “but I’m gonna go in and talk to my deans and everyone, and hope that I can try and balance it all. But I do want the experience of like game days, partying. I don’t really care about school, as you guys all know.”
So after $500,000 in bribes (and now federal charges in the bargain), the ungrateful little wretch is like, "I don’t really care about school, as you guys all know" but she does want "the experience of like game days, partying". You know, the fun parts of college, just not the studying and stuff.

Lori Loughlin’s Daughter Is Reportedly Getting the Hell Away From USC
According to People, sources connected to the freshman say she has “no plans to return to USC” following the shocking college admissions bribery scandal that has indicted both of her parents. “She can’t handle anything right now,” the source adds. “She seems more and more upset every day. She just wants to stay home.”

This development comes after Jade — whose birth name is Olivia Jade Giannulli — lost a handful of sponsored-content and collaboration deals with various companies, which include Sephora, TRESemmé, and the Estée Lauder Companies. “She feels she has worked very hard to get different work deals and everything is just gone. She thought she knew what the future had in store for her, and it all just crumbled,” People’s source added.
This girl, who's had everything handed to her on a silver platter for her whole life, is suddenly waking up to find her world crumbling. She had a budding career as a "beauty vlogger" and "Instagram influencer" with sponsorship deals. Easiest job in the world and probably way more money than I'll ever make, at age 19. I'm sure she'll be OK in the end though. Daddy's still a rich bastard, and if they have any sense they should have plenty saved to fall back on.
Also Lori Loughlin will not be returning on the next season of Fuller House, and the Hallmark channel has also kicked her to the curb.

On the one hand, I'm glad in a general way these folks got nailed.

On the other hand the whole education system is so utterly corrupted I can't get real worked up over this scandal.

Lori Loughlin and Felicity Huffman sued for $500bn in college cheating scam

A US mother has filed a $500bn (£375bn) lawsuit against the people charged in a university admissions scandal, claiming her son was unfairly denied placement.

Jennifer Kay Toy cited the "despicable actions" of the alleged conspirators as the reason her child was not admitted to some universities he had applied to.

A separate class action suit brought by current students has been filed against the universities named by US officials.

Pretty good takedown here, Boss:

https://www.theatlantic.com/ideas/archi ... ls/586468/
Down, down, down she went in the FBI car, in her handcuffs and athleisure, down below Outpost, down below Lake Hollywood, down below the Dolby Theatre where she had been so many times—in a beautiful gown, with her famous husband, William H. Macy, beside her—to watch the Academy Awards, once as a nominee. All the way down to—my God!—the downest place of all: Spring Street. The federal courthouse! This was where Donald Trump was supposed to go, not Felicity Huffman. Cool your heels, defender of the downtrodden: There is no rushing through all this—the mug shot, the phone call, the hearing. And this can’t even be grist for the mill of a new devotion to the plight of American mass incarceration. You’re now Exhibit A of law enforcement finally treating rich, white Americans as unsparingly as it treats poor, black ones.

All she wanted was an even playing field for her rich, white daughter! All she wanted was a few hundred SAT points so the girl didn’t get lost in the madness that has made college admissions so stressful, so insane, so broken, so unfair. “We’re talking about Georgetown,” Macy informed Singer about their hopes for their younger daughter. Fortunately for them, and for the younger daughter—and possibly for Georgetown itself—they had not employed him to work on this goal before the indictments were handed down. Fortunately for Macy (who seems to have taken a modified Parent B position), only Huffman has been indicted in the scheme.

Huffman, like all of the other indicted parents, was expressing an attitude I first encountered not in the great books, but in the Charlie Brown Christmas special, when Sally dictates her endless list of toys to Charlie. “All I want is what I have coming to me,” she tells him; “all I want is my fair share.”
The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.
