Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs

Berkeley High May Cut Out Science Labs
East Bay Express (CA)
The proposal would trade labs seen as benefiting white students for resources to help struggling students.

Berkeley High School is considering a controversial proposal to eliminate science labs and the five science teachers who teach them to free up more resources to help struggling students.

The proposal to put the science-lab cuts on the table was approved recently by Berkeley High's School Governance Council, a body of teachers, parents, and students who oversee a plan to change the structure of the high school to address Berkeley's dismal racial achievement gap, where white students are doing far better than the state average while black and Latino students are doing worse.

Paul Gibson, an alternate parent representative on the School Governance Council, said that information presented at council meetings suggests that the science labs were largely classes for white students. He said the decision to consider cutting the labs in order to redirect resources to underperforming students was virtually unanimous.

...
Perhaps the white students in Berkeley High have an unusually high proportion of parents who are college professors? You know, with lots of books in the house. So that even if the schools make a point of teaching them nothing, they'll pick something up at home.

And of course there's no point in trying to teach science to blacks and Latinos?

So..................let me get this straight: They wanna trade excellence for mediocrity based on race?
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

WTF?

Oh, it's Berkeley. Fucking brain-dead auto-flatulence-connoisseurs.

Even though it's Berkeley, I assume that they aren't really seriously considering this, are they? I mean just because some idiot submits a proposal doesn't mean it will be adopted, right?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

I hope you are being sarcastic. Otherwise, maybe things are different in Japan and you've been away from the US for too long to remember how things work.

If it reduces liability, yes. Doesn't matter how stupid it is, if schools can see a way to reduce their own liability, they will pounce on it.

So, the left's attack on science is back, eh?

Somebody who lives there needs to vote those imbiciles right out of office.

Is it bad to hope the person who suggested it die from a simple infection?

Well, I suppose it's bad.

But it was hard to get that out, and whoever said it needs a proverbial whack upside the head.

What would they be "liable" for? Are racial gaps in achievement now actionable?

Maybe in the long run they will decide that all standardized tests are to be eliminated and grades will henceforth be subjectively decided by teachers to ensure politically correct results.

Eh Schools get targets. Standard method to meet them is target those students on the edge of meeting them. If this means taking resources from those well above the target level then that is what will be done.

It seems to me that neglecting the education of gifted students to focus more resources on educating struggling students won't maximize the ultimate benefit to society of education. A single Jonas Salk or Norman Borlaug benefits society much more than 100 middle managers for Wal-mart. The purpose of science labs is not to make every student a scientist, but to nurture (invest in) the gifted few, some of whom will have a fabulous return on investment for society.

Why do you hate a multicultural America?
The most important things in life–beauty, grace, redemption, compassion, loyalty, love–are beyond the reach of reason. Which doesn’t make them any less real. Stay far back: I'm allergic to Stupid.

The simple rule, the greatest plan, that he should keep who has the power, and he should take who can.

The only enemies of guns: rust ... and politicians.

My version wouldn't close science labs so we could teach ebonics to worthless dumb-fucks.
