My step sons report card in mathematics

He's 11 years old, raised and educated his first 10 years in Russia. He's very well educated/too damned smart (if such a thing is possible....and I personally don't bleeve that).

Got his report card for math today.

Top line reads, and I quote:

Tests.............Score 92.5/92..................Grade 100.5% A+

Then, among some other areas there is this gem:

Fraction/decimal quiz................Score 18...............Grade 105.9% A+

Now, I readily admit I'm not the brightest anchor light in the harbor, but will someone please esplainify to me how such numbers can possibly mean anything? Please save me the embarrassment of either A: Making a complete ass out of myself with the math teacher who will esplainify to my tiny Earth mind how it really truly does mean something, or B: Throttling the math teacher slowly to death for being a fucking wise guy.

Middle school teachers please respond and tell me how anything above 100% makes any Goddamned sense at all.......................

Shit happens. The older you get, the more often shit happens. So you have to try not to give a shit even when you do. Because, if you give too many shits, you've created your own shit creek and there's no way out other than swimming through the shit. Oh, and fuck.

It doesn't seem so unusual to me. Typically this would mean that the examination had optional extra credit questions available on them, and your stepson got all of the main work correct as well as the extra credit.

The meaning of it, is that it can offset a less-than-perfect score later on.

To me it's good news, he's taking extra effort and answering questions he doesn't have to.

Is your very smart son taking AP (advanced placement) math classes. Around here they weight the scores of AP classes so that the kid doing well in AP classes ends up with a better GPA than the kid getting the same grades in a bunch of remedial classes. IF so, it may be an artifact of that weighting.

It couls also be that your son is one of those types who does all the extra credit work even when he doesn't have to.

Your son used general relativity to predict the chance of a position for a subatomic particle. Then convinced the teacher that his answer should be the grade. :P

I'm gonna go with the others and say "extra credit". Sometimes there are bonus questions on quizzes, or homework, or other random crap in an effort solely to boost one's grade.

A lot of teachers throw in extra credit questions, and I bet your son got those in addition to the othe questions right.

Also, some teachers grade on a curve, which can also explain that grade, but I bet it was the extra credit questions.

All I can tell you is what happened to my kids in Redmond High School.

Both stopped taking math after they were Juniors, and got bad grades in a junior math course.

Both went to Bellevue Community College for their senior year of high school.

The older one went from a 'd' in algebra to a b+ in integral calculus, and is now taking group theory, combinatorics, abstract algebra, set theory, logic, and linear algebra (all in one full-load course) this year as a college sophmore/junior (her second year, enough credits to be a junior if she wanted to be).

The younger one went right back to straight 'A's, and now I can talk to her about math, and help her understand it. With what they taught in the High School, for some reason I was wrong half the time.

Given that everything I do involves applied mathematics, I kinda find that odd.

When I was still in school, honors courses added two percentage points to your grade and AP courses added four. That, in addition to extra credit, is more than enough to cause those scores.

That along with lesson-planners incredulous that any student could be that much better at the stuff than them.

At the start of 7th grade, we all had to take this "Social Studies Placement Test". It was pretty varied, with questions on longetude and latitude, continents, and I forget what all. It was supposed to identify where each of us belonged in an individual placement track. I answered all the questions right except for one that I'd accidentally skipped. The teachers held a special conference to discuss WTF to do with me, because they didn't have a placement for me--I scored better than any of the teachers had. *shrug* I'd been paying attention and had read non-fiction by Asimov for pleasure.
