Be My Classmate

Post by Rob Lister »

Would any of you like to attend an introductory class in Artificial Intelligence with me?
It is being offered in partnership with Standford University School of Engineering.
A bold experiment in distributed education, "Introduction to Artificial Intelligence" will be offered free and online to students worldwide during the fall of 2011. The course will include feedback on progress and a statement of accomplishment. Taught by Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig, the curriculum draws from that used in Stanford's introductory Artificial Intelligence course. The instructors will offer similar materials, assignments, and exams.

We can share notes. We can hold study groups. We may even be able to talk our host into making a sub forum just for us.

Did one around 1984. Stanford is in California. Stamford is in Connecticut. I'm not sure where Standford is.

What the hell, might as well. Apparently they added a database course, I'm so signing up for that too.

Well, count me in. Why not. I can use some mental stimulation and it sounds cool besides.

This is really not a shameless bump, but I did want to touch base with my three classmates.

I read the [most interesting] introduction (~30 pages) of the recommended text. One line near the beginning keeps me enthralled.
These six disciplines compose most of Al, and Turing deserves credit for designing a test that remains relevant 60 years later. Yet Al researchers have devoted little effort to passing the Turing Test, believing that it is more important to study the underlying principles of intelligence than to duplicate an exemplar. The quest for "artificial flight" succeeded when the Wright brothers and others stopped imitating birds and started using wind tunnels and learning about aerodynamics. Aeronautical engineering texts do not define the goal of their field as making "machines that fly so exactly like pigeons that they can fool even other pigeons."
So...where my peeps at?

Interesting but it will be a week before I can drop a hundred bucks for the textbook

Bah, too poor to afford a book. Screw it, I learn mostly from lectures anyways :D

Also, I'm gonna try learning/using lisp. I've heard it's good for ai stuff.
