I was real good at 'social studies' in high school

How can we expose more people to critical thinking?

Going off the top of my head, IL requirements are 4 years of English, 3 years math, 3 years social studies, 3 years of science, and 4 years of PE.

Of course, that won't get you into college. They recommend 4 years of math, English and science classes, plus at least 2 years of a foreign language. It looks like no study halls for my daughter.

I was in biology, chemistry, and physics, yet was in social studies in high school. It was really 'American History and Government'.

I still want to see a course in basic logic as a graduation requirement for high school

I ditto your experience. It was American History and Government for us too.

I do not understand why basic logic is not taught. Then again, I've never seen a course of instruction for it.

I have seen it taught as an introductory course to higher mathematics students...

This, after demanding that 9th grade Geometry students generate proofs. I never understood how they could do that ahead of a logic course.
"If fighting is sure to result in victory, then you must fight! Sun Tzu said that, and I'd say he knows a little bit more about fighting than you do, pal, because he invented it, and then he perfected it so that no living man could best him in the ring of honor. Then, he used his fight money to buy two of every animal on earth, and then he herded them onto a boat, and then he beat the crap out of every single one. And from that day forward any time a bunch of animals are together in one place it's called a zoo! (Beat) Unless it's a farm!"
