And again this should be in the frauds and scams forum but technically it is technology so ...
(Newser) – This is either bombshell, world-changing news or "one of the most elaborate hoaxes in scientific history," reports Mark Gibbs at Forbes. An Italian engineer who claims to have achieved cold fusion—the holy grail of clean energy—says his E-Cat device has been deemed credible by an independent team of scientists from European universities. They're all legit scientists with reputations on the line, writes Gibbs, but there's one huge caveat: Their paper has yet to undergo peer review. If inventor Andrea Rossi is right, however, it would mean cheap, pollution-free power for the world. Think "10,000 times the energy density and 1,000 times the power density of gasoline," notes ExtremeTech.
I sometimes think that anything coming from an Italian scientist should have scare quotes around 'scientist'. It isn't really fair except that's were all the woo seems to originate. That might be confirmation bias on my part. India and Russia are still big players in woo too.
Anyway ... and who are these independent team of scientists? Donno. Neither the article or the linked article sez. I suspect there's a few cousins at a community college is at the bottom of it.

Because submission to Nature and Science and the resulting Nobel Prize is far more difficult than cold fusion.

Maybe before we rush to adopt <cold fusion> we should consider the consequences of blithely giving this technology such a central position in our lives.

Cold fusion is nothing like Google Glasses.
If true, it is earth shattering. But before we rush to adopt it, let's be sure it works first.

It is sometimes necessary for the cultured folk to elucidate supratrivial matters for the simpler-minded rabble.

One must exercise care in so doing since it can (and often does) result in nosebleeds in the presumed beneficiaries of such largess.

So to resurrect this thread it seems somebody has a good clue as to why the experiment generated heat.
https://spectrum.ieee.org/energy/nuclea ... -reactions
Interesting and hairy theory that if true would have lots of practical uses.
But it ain't cold fusion.
They provided pictures so I was able to understand it.

So, quantum stuff?
Doesn't sound practical for energy generation on a large scale.
