Atomic friggin bombs

Post by Fid »

http://www.atlasobscura.com/articles/nu ... omb-videos

Lawrence Livermore Labs release videos of previously classified videos of bomb tests. Simultaneously horrifying and "Wow how fucking cool is that."
... The stars were suns, but so far away they were just little points of light ... The scale of the universe suddenly opened up to me. It was a kind of religious experience. There was a magnificence to it, a grandeur, a scale which has never left me. Never ever left me.

On one hand, those images are horrifying. On the other, it's pretty damn impressive that us pun little humans can make something go kaboom that causes a shock-wave that rolls the earth from horizon to horizon and beyond.
Such potential!

The flash of light you saw in the sky was not a UFO. Swamp gas from a weather balloon was trapped in a thermal pocket and reflected the light from Venus.

I got a surprise. No seriously. There is a huge doomsday machine already built, and nobody dares attack any country with lots of reactors and fuel ponds. Because the repercussions from even one large nuclear plant being damaged beyond containment, are so terrible and unimaginable, nobody dares launch even a conventional war. Much less a nuclear strike.

Hell, you don't even want to damage the ability of a country to control it's reactors, because it would mean the end of the world as we know it.

We know now, that just a regular bombing of the cooling outlets might be enough to cause meltdowns, and the loss of cooling for both reactor and fuel ponds. And that is a very very bad thing. Bad enough to destroy everything.

Because once one multi-reactor facility goes gtits up, it could make the next one down wind impossible to work at, due to radiation, and then that one will go. Then the next one, and pretty soon, it's doomsday. They might all go tits up, and it doesn't take much to start the whole disaster. Just destroy one big facility (like Fukushima), then Fukushima II goes, and that's more than enough to destroy everything.

Dominos falling, and much running and screaming, and the end would come right quick.

Hell, it's enough to make a civilized country defend any country that might be attacked, if that country is full of reactors and the very dangerous spent fuel rods.

If you rejected the very idea without much thought, then you will be fine. No need to worry about any doomsday device. Go about your business, remain calm.
