Getting to Zero

Post by Anaxagoras » Tue Jun 18, 2019 1:55 pm

Interesting lecture about what it would take to get our electric power system to zero CO2 emissions.

Getting to Zero

Obviously it's not so easy as a naive person might think about it because "renewable" energy doesn't cover all energy needs.

You can skip the first 3 minutes if you want to get right into it.

Heavy on the untrusted java-script.

It's fine to watch. But here's the blog post where I found it that goes over some of the same points. You won't be able to see the slides though unless you watch the video.

So. There is no one energy solution. I agree with that.

I watched the whole thing. It is not unworthy but he mischaracterizes the difference between the cost per KW and the cost per kWh. I'm not sure he did it intentionally but during the first five or so minutes, he shows the cost of nuclear dwarfing the cost all other sources. In that one example, he is talking about the build cost per KW, given the current regulatory environment. Then he switches to cost per kWh for all other sources. He doesn't otherwise dis nuclear and in fact, places it somewhat correctly in its importance.

If you can stand an hour of it, I recommend it.
