Subjectively from the point of view of the one who didn't fall in -- forever.

This is due to time dilation.

So the hero who saved his own sorry ass can come back years later and save his partner.

At least that's the answer in that novel by Frederik Pohl whose title I forget and you said no Google.

Time dilation makes that not happen before your partner comes back to save you years later.

Aw fuck it ... { google google } ...

Gateway <<== They fall in.
Beyond the Blue Event Horizon <<== He comes back to save his partner.

QED :P

I'm assuming a stellar size black hole.

Not an initially microscopic one orbiting around inside Mars eating it away like in that short story by Larry Niven. 8)

A big enough black hole, you could fall through the event horizon without being spaghettified. From your own time perspective, you could survive quite a long time inside it before getting too close to the singularity.

Depending on the solution to the black hole information paradox, maybe you don't die at all. Doesn't mean it would be pleasant though.

But that's not what I really think. I think it probably doesn't take very long at all in practice. Something like radiation or tidal forces will probably kill you first.

I can't take that ambiguity to my superiors.

3 is not long. 3 seconds? 3 minutes? 3 hours? 3 days?
