Online porn ‘produces the same amount of carbon emissions as all the households in France’
Russia Today
A new study brings a whole new meaning to the term ‘dirty movie’, as online porn has been found to be responsible for 100 million tons of carbon dioxide emissions a year.

The Shift Project’s ‘Climate crisis: The unsustainable use of online video’ report found that a third of all videos viewed online are porn, and that watching online adult entertainment emits just under 100 million tons of CO2 emissions. The emissions generated in 2018 were of the same “magnitude as that of the residential sector in France,” the report found.

Online videos generated 60 percent of the world’s data flows in 2018, which doesn’t include Skype videos or ‘camgirls’ live videos, and creates 300 million tons of CO2 emissions a year.

Video streaming services like Netflix account for a third of online videos, and created the same amount of emissions as the entire Chilean economy.

The report warns that emissions will continue to grow along with our increased viewing of online content and suggests limitations are put in place, such as not autoplaying videos and not using the highest possible resolution.

I think there's a thread on this a few years back that suggests streaming is at worst energy neutral -- and therefore, I suppose, carbon neutral -- because if you're not streaming, you're probably doing something more energy intensive, like driving back and forth to Blockbuster,... or visiting a prostitute,

I wonder how it compares to old fashioned broadcast TV? CRT TVs used more energy than modern LED displays, didn't they?

I used to wake up in the middle of the night and turn dad's satellite dish to the scrambled adult channels. Every so often I could make out a boob. Those were the good old days, when you would actually have to put effort into obtaining low quality smute.
Such potential!

"CRT TVs used more energy than modern LED displays, didn't they?"

Typical set dating back to the 60s, big mothers with nothing but tubes, no transistors yet could easily consume 500 Watts.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Television_set

Nothing much there at the linky about how much power they sucked up, but I once co-opted the power transformer out of one and by measuring the cross section of the center of the iron core, one could compute how much energy it would handle before it began to saturate. In excess of 500 watts. I rewound that core so as to build a power supply suitable for driving solid state audio amps. Took the complete windings down to a local irrigation pump re-manufacturing place and asked them if they'd dip it and bake it for me. They thought I was nuts, but they did it. Worked beautifully.

Back to the point: LED displays are pretty frugal on energy consumption. Like less than a hundred watts for a typical 42". Big plasma displays are friggin' energy hogs. They can consume almost as much as the monster Zenith did back in the good old days.
You can lead them to knowledge, but you can't make them think.

That cartoon is ambiguous.

Needs more labels.
