Richard Feynman

Post by Rob Lister » Thu Oct 24, 2019 3:35 pm

I'd like to say this guy missed his calling, he should have done stand up. Fuck the Nobel Prize in physics, let's do comedy. I've read Surely You're Joking, Mr. Feynman and Six Easy Pieces. Both are is awesome.

I like to think of him as the Blue Collar Physicist.

Here, I present to you:

Richard Feynman Lecture -- "Los Alamos From Below"

Audio only. More than an hour but if you start, you'll wish it was longer.

Okay, that's it. This time I'm not just going to shit on your porch, I'm going to shit in a paper bag, soak it in kerosene, set it on fire, put it on your porch, and then call the fire department and warn them before I ring your doorbell. I don't want to hurt you after all. You might try to roll in it or something. That's the way you roll.

If Feynman were alive today (which he might well have been if he hadn't died young) he'd be the Grand Old Man of particle physics.

And PZ Myers and pals would be trying to "cancel" him for having been a player.

Feynman has a twitter account. I see his words almost daily. He is still great

Well, someone has started a Twatter account with his name on it, but it could hardly have been Feynman himself as he checked out in '88.

It's just quotes from Feynman, but it's still better than anything you ever said.

Attack the person, not the argument.

Now that's First Class pal. :) First Class Dipshit. :De_Bunk:

Now then, I agree Feynman's work was great. "QED: The Strange Theory Of Light And Matter" is something I revisit yearly.

But let's not deify the guy. He's (was) only human after all, Umkay?

One of my (male) friends – who, admittedly, is in the clutches of a vegetarian women studies prof (ha!) – had harsh words for Dick's treatment of women.

I think I've read most of his books but can't remember anything putting me off on the subject.

Am I blinded by macho patriarchy or is my estimable friend oversensitive?

I seem to recall some allegations that he mistreated his first wife.

Ah, yes. Here:
https://slate.com/technology/2019/01/ri ... e-fbi.html
a divorce on what’s described as cruelty grounds. Feynman’s FBI files, released in 2012, cite a longer version of the divorce story (see Page 64 here): Reportedly, Feynman’s ex alleged that he didn’t just ignore her when he felt she interrupted him—he “flew into a violent rage,” and “choked her, threw pieces of bric-a-brac about and smashed the furniture.”
I guess he didn't like to be interrupted when he was having a deep think. Maybe it would derail his train of thought while he was trying to solve a difficult physics problem, and he didn't appreciate that? Still, the "violent rage" bit does sound like an overreaction.

“Mrs. Feynman won a divorce on cruelty grounds after testifying that her husband worked calculus problems all day,” the copy read. He did math “as soon as he arose, while he drove his car,” even “while lying in bed at night.” When he wasn’t doing that, he was playing drums, which “made a terrific noise.” If she tried to talk to him, he said she was interrupting his work. She got alimony; he got the bongos.

You're right. And y=g(x) should be y=g(-x). Dumbasses, all. I can't believe we even got to the moon. John Dobson explains it nicely.

If that doesn't convince you, consider:

Are you still not conviced? How about this:

Moon landings were faked! And I'd really rather not buy into the personal stuff about Feynman. But as I said, he was only human, and could very well have been a complete dickhead in his personal life.

Shit happens.

Doesn't change the fact that "QED" is a great read. Wish I could understand even a tenth of it!
