Traffic science

I found this remarkably interesting video about a new design for a highway interchange. Just wanted to share it.

Thanks. They just put one in around here.
At 5:12 he says the truck stops for a few seconds and then goes on. Yes, there was no traffic in his example, I am not sure that the interchange had anything to do with it.

I remember reading a piece in SI ages ago to the effect that if a car slows down appreciably on a highway for a few seconds, that the impact can be a stoppage miles behind him. That sorta makes since since most people over react to a car slowing down in front. So they slow and slow and slow.

Traffic theory and queuing theory are probably closely related subjects. If you have a chokepoint anywhere on a road, you will have traffic jams. If more people are arriving at any given point on average than can safely pass through that point, you're going to have a traffic jam.

Another good one I stumbled across.

Clark Griswald and Homer Simpson make an appearance midway through the video.

So some toen in Indiana foes globalist?

FWIW, New Jersey has lots of "roundabouts" and everybody hates them.

There is one near where I live that it now closed for construction of a proper intersection with traffic lights. 8)
